Correct date code for air cleaner on a 65 mustang "A" code
« on: November 18, 2014, 05:46:32 PM »
I have a 65 mustang "A" code with a build date of late May. My Engine, carburetor, and intake are all numbers matching for the car and I want to put the correct air cleaner, snorkel, and valve covers.

My question is: What is a appropriate date code on the air cleaner and snorkel for my vintage car. Should I be looking for a 5D, 5A or what range is considered "correct" - assuming that they stocked these parts in bulk before assembly... also should the snorkel be stamped the same code or would it just be in a close range.

Thank you for any help on this!

C, D or E would be acceptable, both on air cleaner base and snorkel (as well as heat riser).  I have a spare super nice 5D snorkel with original paint, send a PM if interested.

Did Snorkel's get date stamps ?  I have several including the one in the above post that do not.  So which ones and where ?  Thanks,  Brian

Can't recall seeing a Mustang snorkel not having a date code.  Have seen some early air cleaner bases w/out a date code, but not snorkels.

There is a couple of variants in the bases in 65 around that time
SJ cars will have the pcv emmissions setup for 65
Other plants wont have the elbow on the front of the air cleaner base

I thought the elbow was dependent on the DSO not the plant the car was made at...

Did New York delivered cars get the same modification?

I have noticed some that were painted over the years and its hard to find the date code. If you strip all the paint off you'll probably find the code underneath  :) The Location would be on the flat part of the snorkel - towards the outside opening.

Thanks for the date stamp location and the picture.  Some sign of the stamp should be visible without removing the paint.  Brian
