Title: Chrome oil cap - 1967 289 with AC and T/E - CA emissions
Post by: Deuce on October 29, 2016, 11:05:45 PM
I acquired this chrome oil cap from West Coast Classic Cougars (WCCC) to run on my '67 C-code Mustang with AC and Thermactor for CA emissions.

Were these chrome caps (with the turned up nipple end) common for '67 Cougars equipped with AC and CA emissions?

Looking through my limited number of Cougar pictures I'm not finding the chrome version but the black one being the commonly used one.

Even one with the chrome air cleaner lid example I have has the black cap though it may be part of a dress up kit

On a related note painted cap wise. Vintage photos confirm other instances of painted caps in places where they were suppose to be chrome. The examples I am familiar with are old Polaroids of  67 Shelby's which were all supposed to have a chrome dress up kit sometimes had painted caps substituted. More likely that cars supposed to get chrome caps got substituted painted caps then the other way around . Painted caps were plentiful ,chrome caps were not.

Thank you for the comments and checking those old photos. I'll consider it fortunate that I found a chrome cap for a Thermactor car.  Interesting that there weren't enough of the correct caps to go around, even back then.

The chrome dress up was part of the DGS package or Dan Gurney Special. Basically a chrome lid on the air cleaner, valve covers, oil dip stick, and oil fill cap. Oh, and sticker for the window. LOL

There is one on Craig's list. http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/cto/5861904167.html (http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/cto/5861904167.html) I can't lift a picture, maybe someone else can?

NOTES:
1.) Odd AC Compressor. I can't recall seeing one like it before. Remnant of Thermactor Hose HOOP strap still on top (BTW, I am looking for one of these hen's teeth!)

2.) Thermactor Pump and system seem to have been removed A/C Tensioner pulley added where otherwise, a Thermactor System would typically go over to the smog pump without the tensioner or adjuster pulley in the center.

3.) NO Heat Stove Ducting on the air cleaner though it has a screen similar to the Big Block cars with Chrome Dress-Up. Never seen that before. Scott ??? your wisdom ??? Is this typical for the DGS?

That air cleaner assembly looks fresh, could be the Scott Drake reproduction that came out recently.

With a 71 DSO the air cleaner is incorrect for the car/region

It appears to be an aluminum pump. Possibly changed out at some point in the past as the aluminum pumps were the ones typically used for service parts. Figured it was due to the fact that they were much lighter and didn't rust while in storage

I've read in this forum that those hoop straps are hard to find.   One is still on my car and it remains in service securing the Thermactor hose, but I think it had a factory rubber insulation coating that's long gone.  Is there a successful way to recoat the strap with rubber again?

Most hardware stores, home depot etc.  sell the rubber product to dip tool handles in or the spray rubber in the rattle can (flex seal as seen on TV  ;D ).

Yes just use some black tool dip available at places like Harbor Freight ;)
