Title: Gauge backplate color
Post by: BKnapp on December 02, 2016, 11:10:16 PM
I have tried multiple searches with varying combinations of words to no avail. I have my instrument cluster taken apart and am thinking of painting the face of of the cluster backplate. It looks to be an off-white or almond color. Is this correct, or was it white and the years have darkened it?

Thanks!

Believe it was likely closer to white than almond or off white. Have multiples that are closer to white than others

Thanks, Jeff. I will go with white.

Now that I have the clock working, gauges stored safely away, and cleaning up the backplate, I am having difficulty determining the finish of the backside. Most of it appears to have some sort of coating on it (paint or maybe zinc?) but bright steal is showing in areas where it has rubbed off. Can someone confirm what the original finish?

Thanks!

Now that I have determined the face should be white, what color or finish should the backside be?

Looks too dull to me for zinc would guess cad - but not sure how that would affect the grounding needs. Pretty sure its plated given how well it holds up compared to allot of parts under the dash  But sorry never have had the finish tested to be sure
