Title: 1968 radio bracket side screws/bolts?? with console
Post by: Hipo giddyup on April 17, 2017, 09:51:33 AM
I am trying to get a detail or pic of the side screws / bolts that hold the radio bracket in the console. These attach from the outer sides of the console into the bracket that supports the radio. I tried digging through the 67-68 hardware spreadsheet but it's a little overwhelming.

Also, anyone know the rollpin size for the ashtray lid?? I need two of those as well.

Jim, great work on the spreadsheets! Is there a " keyword search" function?? Sorry, not the best with maneuvering within an excel sheet.

I agree with Jeff that this is an area not photographed often.  I'm off to a graduation ceremony and have a ton of honey do chores this weekend, but will try to look for pics myself.

In the meanwhile, attached is a document that should teach you how to fish in Jim's fastener man made fishing pond.  Give it a whirl, and report back on both the console radio and ash tray questions you posed.  Did you find partial or full answers or not?

Thank you. It's a how-to I've thought about creating but couldn't get the right wording. I'm at a definite advantage in the use of the spreadsheets as I started them in 1994 on Lotus 123 and converted them to Excel when I got Microsoft Office. (I prefer Lotus 123.)
So, thanks again,
Jim

There is some confusion here. First the answer: it's 380934-S2, 8-18X1/2PAN 5/16,XREC,DRILL TIP, 2 required. This part number is not in the 2014 AMK bulk section, but may be in the "packaged hardware" section for 68 interior console (page 249) under stock number, F-1099 (28 pieces - $14).
You identified it as a "radio bracket", and from the console installation, it's just a bracket for console installation. There are two different drawings in two different assembly manuals that document this. From the console installation (1968 Interior Assembly Manual, AM0022, pg 11), it is implied that a radio is installed with the console, there is no radio delete panel depicted. The console is attached to the bracket with 2 each 380934-S2 screws. The bracket is itself is documented in the electrical manual (AM0023, pgs 66 and 69) but shows no screw for console to bracket.
I'll "fix" the master list and it will reflect the radio mounting bracket the next release.

Agreed, confusion...I'd say MUCH confusion...
Several online vendors sell and photograph the AMK products and have them listed by AMK number, enabling us to see what is in the bulk items NOT pictured in the AMK catalog. That being said to help you get a look at what is in the pack of 28 pieces for the AMK F-1099 68 console package. NOTICE: No matter what online vendor you choose, not one of those 28 items pictured look to have a "DRILL TIP".

Furthermore, as not to muddy the waters anymore than I just did, (but here I go...stirring again ::) ) I agree that the original screws were self-drilling because the bracket the consoles were mounted to the dash with were NOT pre-drilled, thus requiring a drill-tip screw. (If you compare multiple original examples of this bracket side-by-side, the hole is NEVER in the same spot)
Though I have worked more on 67's than 68's, I recall always finding drill-tip screws in this location, but more of the variety of the wide head, self-drilling version that hold the Roof Drip Side Finish Molding in place (stainless molding that holds the window, upper weatherstrip in place). This could be a plant-specific/time period detail. I will not add hardware numbers to reduce my "muddying" and will quit stirring for the time being.

SUMMARY: I think you had better locate another unrestored original example before simply buying what AMK provides. ;)
...and by looking at the witness marks on your console (your picture), it looks as though what I recall typically seeing there was used also on your console :D

I note the label on the bags says "Console > Floor". The screws in question are console to radio bracket at the lower dash.
There is some confusion here.
Yup.

Well I had the same question about the fasteners in the AMK package so I did a search to see if anyone else had said anything. I carefully saved the original hardware.

My console only had three of the nuts holding the forward face to the main part of the console. Those matched perfectly to the AMK parts.

The screws that hold the console to the hump were a faithful copy of the originals.

The two screws that are being discussed look like they originally were cadmium plated. They have an integral washer style head and are drill tipped.
