hood blackouts etc
« on: March 05, 2015, 02:16:08 PM »
Generally speaking, how did Ford handle the extra painting on a Mustang? Base color was applied, now how was the hood painted,i.e. blackout, silver on 71's etc. Body got out of line then back in? How did they handle all the parts to put on it?

Think it might be best to be specific as to what year, model and plant since things were often handled slightly different based on how the plant and stations were arranged. As well as other details. You have hood black outs done during 68- 73 so allot of years and plants then in 71-3 you have the lower body black or silvers also

In some cases (69 Mach and Boss come to mind) the process is outlined in the body section of the Assembly manuals believe that particular detail was added after the car was near the end of the final process, once the car was on its own wheels and tires. In that example only a couple of parts would have been needed to be added after that process - like wipers

Its not like the hood paint needed to be baked (lower body color got "baked" since it was put on much earlier)  and was likely done at the end of the second line  before the car went into final. IF it was like the 69 information we have a frame was lowered onto the hood and that outline was used to mask off the top of the hood, then the hod was painted and a few trim items (depending on year) were installed. Car would then move into the area where the fluids were added, and all the final checks and adjustments made.
