need 68 390 air cleaner pic
« on: June 20, 2010, 09:42:16 PM »
I am trying to figure out what does a correct air cleaner base and snorkel look like for a 68 S  code. Don't know if build date or plant makes any difference but it's dearborn and summer of 68 assembly. A picture would be great.

Jeff thanks for posting the pics. Out of curiosity the vacuum thing on the drivers side has a vacuum line going to what? The fitting on the intakes water neck? What color stripe on that vacuum hose? Did all the air cleaner bases have this vacuum fitting? Or is it specific to a 4 speed car or an automatic?

The vacuum pod/valve is standard on all S codes that year (both auto and 4 speeds)

Vacuum was supplied by a blue striped hose (likely a solid stripe rather than the MX at most factories)

The supply is from intake vacuum the PVS (fitting on the water neck) is for vacuum control of the distributor

Jeff,

In looking at the photos the snorkels are different.

Photo 3 is the "short connector" version that jogs the inlet part of the snorkel backwards, 1,2, and 4 are the "long connector" that jogs it forwards.  I was under the belief that the short/rearward is "correct" for a '68 Mustang and the longer was later truck/other use...  as the short is harder to find (in my experience).

Is either type correct for a 68 Mustang?  Plant specific, or ...???

Good eye - must have posted in the middle of the night.

Looks very confusing -

Seems that we have a couple of different snorkels and allot of cars out there with different ones installed

I've got some good pictures of original X codes with the forward bending snorkels

I've got a fair number of restored and played with S codes with forward bending snorkels but we all know how far we can trust those cars.

Tom Cherry 0 typically very good on wrecking yard parts and part numbers offers the following

Tought the X codes got this type:

And on the two styles shown above, which is correct for a '68 S code Mustang?  Again, I had seen reference to the short connector and the long ones were later, more common, variations from other 390's.

Nope - that's a T bird style one that was used on some Thermactor equipped,  Calif delivered, Mustangs in 67

I'm not finding a good solid trend in the original S code 68's I have pictures of.

So with all the Gold Judges who frequent here, no answer?

If I show my two 68 S codes with one of each models shown there will be no point deduction on either, as the "correct" application is unknown...???

The shorter snorkle is the one I've seen over the years as being correct on the  '68 390 gt  S-code. I've also seen the t-bird style air cleaner on '67 non GT 390 cars with a chrome lid and on '68 x-codes, but with a ford blue painted lid.

Not sure exactly how many 67-68 Gold Card Judges are here but there are a couple at least.

Still don't buy the 67 T bird style air cleaner on a 68 since there would be no way to hook it up to the heat shield - a standard item on all these engine ;)

Some pic's of the '68 390 GT air cleaner and '69 428CJ air cleaner to compare.     I also wouldn't rule out the '67 style t-bird air cleaner as the '68 t-bird with the 390 standard base engine used the same air cleaner[non heatshield]. Wasn't till the 390 was dropped from the '68 t-bird line up around Jan/1/'68 and replaced with the 429 thunderjet motor as the standard base engine for the t-bird[with a heatshield].
