Correct water pump for 64.5 D code
« on: July 08, 2018, 12:56:14 AM »
Hello.  We got the 64 1/2 mustang running today and the water pump is shot.  I am told the one on it is incorrect.  What is the right pump for this car?  Aluminum no backing plate?  Suggestions?  NPD or rock auto.

March 64 build.  289 D code Generator with PS NO AC.

If it has a generator it will most likely have the C4 marked aluminum waterpump. The C5 marked pump is for a alternator equipped car. The brackets mount slightly different between one and the other. NPD doesn't sell the generator car pump . Who knows with rock auto. I have never tried to make a C5 pump work on a generator car so I can't say about the problems.  I do know a C4 pump causes problems when mounting on a alternator car.

Hmmm. I don't think that's what's on it now.  As I believe it's cast iron

As a "sanity check", see what the part number is on the timing cover.

From the picture it is the aluminum style. Maybe it is a cast iron aftermarket pump given the aluminum style case.

Well I ordered from Rockauto, hope it works out.  So much cheaper than local.

The correct 64.5 V8 water pump would be aluminum and have a C4OE-8505-A casting number.

Originals can be rebuilt if you're able to find a date-correct one.

If the timing cover is this thick:

it's an early water pump style with no back cover on the water pump. The timing cover is the back of the pump.

We got the water pump off today, I think it will clean up well, and go right back on.  Always want to to preserve the originality.
