Features that make up a 68 GT
« on: September 16, 2018, 09:40:44 PM »
ADMIN NOTE: The following was split from another (now locked) thread that started out trying to cover both 67 & 68 in the same thread ;)

The following applies to 1968 Model Year:

GT engines: J-Code 302-4V, S-Code 390-4v, X-Code 390-2V, R-Code 428-4V Cobra Jet (All had 9 inch rear)

The J-Code was also offered in a non-GT model w/ 8 Inch rear, the S-Code 390-4V was also offered at the beginning of the model production without being at GT.  The GT option became mandatory with the S-Code 390 post strike.

The disc brake option remained only for the J-Code (possibly X-Code), but was a mandatory option on the S-Code and R-Code cars.

The GT included GT Badging, C-Stripe, Fog Lights, Chrome Engine Components on 390 and 428, Styled Steel Wheels with GT Center Caps, F70-14 WSW Tires (Cobra Jets received RWL tires), dual exhaust with chrome extensions, pop-open GT gas cap, improved suspension.

May have missed a few things, I'll add as others provide input or I remember something else.

Danny

I believe your statement about "mandatory" GT option on 390GT-engine cars is incorrect. My San Jose fastback was built in February 1968, long after the strike ended on October 22, 1967. It is an S-code car, non-GT.

I believe the statement to be correct. I can not say how your car was built as a non GT but it was Ford's policy that all would be GTs.
Here is a Ford Sales addendum stating that all 390 4V were required to have the GT option. Note the date 12-12-67 in the lower RH corner.

Dave,
Curious...does your car have the recessed rear reflectors or not?

For some reason I'm thinking Mid-February (March) change over, but I am not certain.  I know what Ford intended and what they published (thanks,Marty), but do not know the exact date. One factory may have produced non-GT 390's later into production, I just don't know.

Kerry has supplied a Marti Report for a car built Mid-March without the GT option.  I'm sure Kevin Marti could provide the date(s) of the last Non-GT 390 car build if someone were to pay the research fee.

It seems to me although it does not list the GT option but it has most of the of the option with HD suspension, styled steel wheel and wide ovals. It may have met Ford's requirements with out the GT option.

Went through some of the 68 Marti reports I have copies of though stayed away from the Calif Special and High Country cars right now since those may be worded different because of that option.

Did find the following as examples of  non GT S codes. Didn't choose to post spring - late  production GT's

Feb 16th

March 6th

Maybe I'll get time to go through the stack of the other (Cal Spec and HCS ones) but they are all hard copies
