1966 289 a/c pulley tension with smog system
« on: May 08, 2017, 07:23:01 PM »
(289, p.s., a/c and smog system)....was there an adjustable belt tensioner pulley as on a non smog, a/c car, or was the smog pump adjustment used to tighten the a/c compressor belt  instead?

Found a picture on the web that appears original, showing the smog pump replaces the a/c belt tensioner pulley on the car.  Its' adjustment is used to apply tension to the a/c compressor belt.  Contemplating purchasing an original CA car and accumulating all the original smog parts......I assume this is not an easy thing to do...getting "all" the original components?  Any one go down this road successfully?  The car does have the original smog pump/alternator mount, original exhaust manifolds...but that's about it...a lot left to find!

I might have some of the 66 parts as extras but I know I do not have enough to say "I have that"! I'll try and look in the morning to see what all I do have.

Hi man,

I think I have all the parts, or almost all of them here.  Let me know what you exactly need so I can look for it in my garage. Air pump, manifolds, air canister, backfire valves, etc... all here.

Systems are out there - remember these were installed on tens of thousands of Ford products not just Mustangs. Frozen the pump is frozen since the owners sometimes removed the belts or removed the pump and just let them sit.  The challenge is that when you need a system their harder to find when you don't they pop up.

One of the biggest challenges can be removing the original distribution "trees" since they rust up and the tube twist as you try and unscrew them from the head if you have a car that uses the external system.  remember also there are a a number of different systems and running changes during the production year
