Correct Power steering pump 66 mustang
« on: June 22, 2017, 07:46:45 AM »
Hi all, I'm wanting to know if the attached image, Power S/pump is correct for a 66 Mustang coupe.  I realize the mount is not correct however I'm not sure about the return line spout.  My understanding is the spout should be turned down, not as depicted in the image.  I'm wanting it for my 66 GT, as I want to keep it as original as possible.  Asking price is $200, a little steep I reckon however the bracket could get some money back if I sell it.  What do you reckon.

I live in Melbourne Australia, so if anyone has one here for sale I am interested.

Thanks

First let's see what others say as i am not the powersteering expert but in my opinion yes, it is the correct style for a 1966 Mustang (I do not think plants varied on this). The mounting bracket appears to be from a 67'-68' model year , and maybe later. There looks to be a tag on the back of the pump housing. Have you checked and deciphered if it is from a Mustang? The tag will tell what car line it was for, the year, etc... Hope this helps.

There is a second style with a tilted filler neck for AC cars.

You might want to ask any seller for the tag information to determine what it was made for

As for the one in the picture it appears that its a C6OZ-3A674-BRM

I  dont have the tag information as yet as I have not travelled to the location to view it.  I appreciate your feedback as every little bit helps.  I'm aware of the tilted neck type pump which is for models fitted with A/C.  Mine does not have A/C.  It all appears correct, it was just the concern on the return pipe location compared to others I have seen with the pipe pointing down that may not be specifically for a 66 mustang.

I will be viewing the item later today so I should be able to decipher the tag then, (Hopefully)

Likely is not - the reason I included the part number above and the tag information will likely confirm that and in turn the different inlet arrangement/length and angle

The one in the pic is not correct.  The 65-66 style rear cover will not have that additional brace and the nipple should be pointed downward.  If the original tag is present, that should also help identify the pump, assuming it is original to the unit.  The A/C and non-A/C pump covers for 65-66 have the same lower nipple config.

The tags for a 65-66 Ford pump used on Mustangs are as follows:
- 200 CID I6 - HBA-AN
- 289 CID V8 - HBA-AC
- 289 CID V8 W A/C - HBA-AD
There "may" be numbers 1 thru 4 at the end of the letters. It does not have pictures of the differences. My understanding is the differences are mostly in the return tube for the reservoir. There may be other differences.
Looking at the MPC P/S pump (3A674) list, a 66 390 Fairlane used the same pump as the 65-66 Mustang 289. The same pumps apply for a 65 Falcon I-6 and V8.
Part of telling you what is incorrect comes the responsibility of telling you what is correct.
You can find out what a lot of what is correct by downloading the Ford MPC from this link. It's about 450mb and consists of 45 files. Somebody is selling an unused paper version for $600. This one is free.

P/S pump HEH-AT was used on 66 Full size Fords and 66 Falcons with a 289 CID engine, W/O A/C.
