Gear Oil Weight suggestion needed for 4spd gear box using original trans seal

(1/1)

Sean C. Gearty:
Anyone own or restore thoroughbred level cars that are not driven, but show cars only?
-a car that is only driven on and off a trailer for short distances

If so, there is an original seal in the back of my trans that is weeping 80Wx90 oil on me.

My question is, has anyone used a higher weight gear oil to help prevent any small leaks without damaging the trans?
-my Mustang is a 1969 with an RUG-AE2 Trans

Thank you for your help and suggestions

I am certainly no thoroughbred expert, but I would suggest running only 1 qt of oil or so in the trans.  This will still be enough for the gears to pick up and sling around but should be below the output shaft seal.

I would not recommend this for a 50 mile journey, but a 1/2 mile trip would be fine IMO.

Hey Jim,
good idea for now. Thanks!

I will reduce to one quart, and await any other direction from the forum.
