But why does the non GT replacement grille get the special paint? Were there bot 2 replacement part numbers?

As i previously stated in this thread, there were three 68 grille parts numbers listed in the 68 year specifc MPC; -A for non-fog lamp grille, -B for fog lamp grille, and -C for economy, delete package. Like in 67, it is possible that Ford allowed the service replacement grilles to be painted all black once the model year production cycle ended. I do not know the basis for the 2-tone grille, when Ford used it and when they didn't, but thought it would make for an interesting discussion.

Nope, at least on mine.  Blue hues, not argent/gray....

The blue looks like the same color used on '67 grilles.
