Topic: 1966 rectangular side mirror

Hello all,
My 1966 Sprint 200 hardtop had a single rectangular side view mirror installed on it when I bought it from a previous owner in 1990.  The Mustang Restoration Guide lists a Ford part number for a rectangular mirror in 65/66 but no other details.  I am curious, does anyone know if this could be the factory installed mirror or is it more likely that it had the standard round type mirror?  If so, was this rectangular mirror special order/part of a package or was it simply what Ford had in stock at the time?  Thanks very much for any info.

mirrors were installed at the dealer to prevent damage in shipping. if they were out of the correct style a substitute could have been made or if the customer so desired it could also be changed.

Are you sure that the mirrors were dealer installed? The Martha Reeves assembly line video shows these mirrors installed on the car at the factory.

It's clear in the video that the REMOTE DRIVER'S MIRRORS were installed at the plant.  This doesn't help when it comes to the non-remote ones.

I can't tell from the video if they are remote mirrors. If the point was to avoid damage, why install the more expense remote mirrors and not the standard ones?

The Vandelas video is 1965.  The mirrors shown in it are definitely the remote type.
The link picture above is 1966 and shows a light colored car on the left that definitely
has the remote mirror.  I can't see enough detail on the mirror of the car on the right
to tell.  It APPEARS to be a standard round mirror.

It's kinda difficult for me to discern which type mirrors we're looking at. The pictures are a little fuzzy and the reflection of the lights off the chrome doesn't help.

I agree that the video is the 1965 model year and the photo is 1966; you can tell from the quarter accent trim. Remote mirrors were available both years, however.

My Sprint has LH and RH mirrors on it, but they're not the correct round ones. But I believe this was done by a PO and not the dealer or factory.

In the assembly line photo that's referenced, the car on the right is a "standard" mirror. I'm quit sure the car on the left has a remote mirror. The profile view of the right side vehicle makes it pretty easy to make out the mirror style. The key indicator for a remote mirror being on the left car is the visible round depression on the mirror head. Sure looks like one!

Putting a heavy magnifying glass on pic, the white car on left is remote. The other one next to it is clearly a standard mirror. The 66's that came off the trailers had the mirrors attached. I bought a 66 new taking delivery in Jan. 66. Saw the car when it had yet to be prepped and mirror was attached. Remember it well as I wanted a mirror on the pass side, also. They put one on at cost.(or so they said-LOL!)
