Engine Final Assembly Plant Code "Z"???
« on: June 07, 2014, 10:54:35 PM »
My 67 Mustang has one of the Late 289's built on a 302 block and today I was able to read the final assembly date.

7G6Z

I thought the late 289's that had the 302 block casting numbers were made in Cleveland.

Is "Z" a valid code? It is clear as day!

Z is a common short hand code for 'Mustang'. The Z may have been placed on the block to differentiate it from other engine assemblies. That is my guess anyways.

Scott, it's rather funny you would respond first...This engine came from a 67 A-code w/Thermactor...COUGAR!

If the date code you are referring to was on a "boss" near the distributor, it decodes to year (7 - 67), month (G - July), day (6 - 6) and the "Z" is -- either the inspector or assembler's code (inspector seems to be more appropriate).

Yes, on the boss near distributor at the head gasket plane.

I understood that  much about the date, but I thought the last letter was supposed to be a "C" Cleveland or a "W" Windsor.

I'm no expert, just trying to learn to better understand decoding dates etc.

Nope - last letter (According to a TSB article about that stamping) was to identify the worker who assembled the engine
