Title: 1966 coil location
Post by: CCP on February 13, 2018, 12:16:51 PM
Morning guys. Wondering where the coil goes on a '66 convertible. I've seen pictures of both the intake and cylinder head.
It's an April 21st build date, C- code automatic with A/C, NJ plant.
It's currently on the intake. Going to do a little engine bay detailing and want to get it right.

      Thanks,   Pete.

Search  (Using the words "66 unrestored") turned up the following that showed the location

The ones you saw on the intake were most likely San Jose cars. the were on the intake when a Thermactor was equipped. It couldn't be installed on the head then.

OK, thanks again guys. The alternator is mounted to a bracket that is mounted to the cylinder head, and there is no way to mount the coil bracket.
 Makes sense now.

A picture would be nice (hint).

this is not my car but it should give you an idea. the smog pump would be in the way of mounting on the head.

If a NJ car originally had a smog/Thermactor pump that would be unusual and motivate someone to check the DSO  ::)

Very true. the alternator on a NJ car does mount using a round spacer and bracket to the head, but there is room for the coil here too. Not sure what he is seeing.

I assumed the car in question was sent to DSO 24 as indicated in the signature section and original post, convertibles. As such, it would not be equipped with California smog - unless it was brought into California during the era of retrofits (an era of mass confusion) for smog.

I am very familiar with smog equipment. I'm located about 4 1/2 miles from the San Jose assembly plant in Milpitas, and there's two "A" code, DSO 72 hardtops on the side of my house in storage (garage has two Fastbacks - priorities).

The DSO for this car is 16, Philadelphia.

Sorry, jwc66k, this is not the car in my signature, but rather a different car I happen to be working on.
My fault for not specifying.  Again, sorry and thanks for the help.  :)

I'm on a smallish screen -- is that a B302 alternator spacer?

Very well could be, LOL. These cars come into the shop and I have to work with what i'm given.

should be mounted to that open hole near the dip stick bolt. this is my NJ C code.  Its a tight fit but it fits.

Pete,
The coil shares the dip stick retainer bolt (378604-S8, 3/8-16X3/4 hex, gr 5) when mounted to the head. It's "tight".

I think it's actually a mid seventies Ford truck alternator spacer (see pic).
Does look a bit lit a B2 spacer -- ha!

With this part in the way you won't be able to fit the coil.
You need to get the correct alternator setup -- pull the truck part and find the correct spacer -- and then your coil should fit.

Looking at the picture - not rally a question for this site since there is allot of non-original stuff going on so really no reason IMHO to put it back where it originally was.

Looks like the answer to the original question was put is anywhere it will fit and the coil wires will reach  ::)

Nope. And used on Mavericks and Granada. Part number 10A336.

Ah, enlightenment. And the above is correct. But is that adapter for a 289/302 or a 351W?
Jim
(Still, way too much chrome.)

Ah yes, way too much chrome!  Not my cup of tea. As I said, not my car, just one that came into the shop. I agree with Jeff, i'm going to put it back on the intake where it was and move on.
Thanks again guys for the info and input.

Pete,
You might let your customer know what you found out about that little detail. It's a good sales technique to keep a customer and get positive referrals.
