1966 coil location
« on: February 13, 2018, 12:16:51 PM »
Morning guys. Wondering where the coil goes on a '66 convertible. I've seen pictures of both the intake and cylinder head.
It's an April 21st build date, C- code automatic with A/C, NJ plant.
It's currently on the intake. Going to do a little engine bay detailing and want to get it right.

      Thanks,   Pete.

The ones you saw on the intake were most likely San Jose cars. the were on the intake when a Thermactor was equipped. It couldn't be installed on the head then.

OK, thanks again guys. The alternator is mounted to a bracket that is mounted to the cylinder head, and there is no way to mount the coil bracket.
 Makes sense now.

A picture would be nice (hint).

this is not my car but it should give you an idea. the smog pump would be in the way of mounting on the head.

If a NJ car originally had a smog/Thermactor pump that would be unusual and motivate someone to check the DSO  ::)

Very true. the alternator on a NJ car does mount using a round spacer and bracket to the head, but there is room for the coil here too. Not sure what he is seeing.

I assumed the car in question was sent to DSO 24 as indicated in the signature section and original post, convertibles. As such, it would not be equipped with California smog - unless it was brought into California during the era of retrofits (an era of mass confusion) for smog.

I am very familiar with smog equipment. I'm located about 4 1/2 miles from the San Jose assembly plant in Milpitas, and there's two "A" code, DSO 72 hardtops on the side of my house in storage (garage has two Fastbacks - priorities).

Sorry, jwc66k, this is not the car in my signature, but rather a different car I happen to be working on.
My fault for not specifying.  Again, sorry and thanks for the help.  :)

I'm on a smallish screen -- is that a B302 alternator spacer?
