1966 Sprint 200 question

Hey everybody.  I'm new here to the forums.  My name is Michael.  I am currently a freshman at McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas.  I'm majoring in automotive restoration.  My daily driver is a 1966 Ford Mustang "Sprint 200" coupe.  It's Wimbledon White with the red standard interior.

That's where I need some help.  I know roughly what the "Sprint 200" package was and what came with it, but I'm hoping to find out a bit more, such as different versions of the package, how much the package cost, etc.  I have some original ads for it but they don't give a whole lot of information.  Thanks guys, Michael.

Console, wire wheel covers, chrome breather, no quarter ornaments, 1/8" pinstripe around depression in vehicle side  mind went blank!!!  Imagine that! Bill

I think that the date that the car was built would also be a factor to determine a Sprint 200, as it was a "Millionth Mustang" sales promotion?  I have located a mostly original fastback Sprint 200, but cannot seem to pry it away from the owner.  I believe it is fairly uncommon to see a fastback Sprint?

Hello Michael.  I have "re-birthed" the 1966 Sprint 200 Registry last year and hope to have the website up for it shortly.  Send me the dataplate info for your car and some pics to my e-mail address at: NEFaurora@aol.com and I'll be happy to add it to the new registry.  The 1966 Sprint 200 is not to be confused with the '67-'68 Sprint cars which were different, A V8 version Sprint was added for '67-'68.  The 1966 200 Sprint cars have the clear distinction of being only six banger cars, and they were also the first factory "Special Edition" Promotion Mustangs offered by Ford to the public.  '64 1/2 Pace cars were only given to dealers.  There were two Sprint  200 Mustang versions offered in 1966, Package "A" cars which were Standard Shift cars, and Package "B" cars which were Automatics.  The Automatic "B" cars outsold the standard "A" cars something like three or four to one.  The Automatics Sprints were very popular and most targeted towards women for sale such as the 1966 Ford Mustang Sprint Ad "Six and the Single girl" and so forth. The 1966 "Spring Sprint" or "Sprint 200" package as they were called was available in all 3 bodystyles, Coupe, Convertible, and Fastback. I have yet to find a "True" Sprint 200 Fastback car, but I know that they are out there. Both Standard and Deluxe Pony Interiors could be ordered, with Pony Interiors being the hardest to find.   The hardest 1966 Sprint 200 car to find would be a Deluxe Interior Package "A" Standard transmission Fastback.  1966 Fastback Sprint 200's are the hardest to find and the hardest to verify as Sprints without original documentation as All fastbacks came with No Quarter ornmentation!! 1966 Sprint Coupes are the most common of the bunch with the Convertibles being much harder to find. The Fastback Sprint 200's are the hardest to find..

True '66 Sprint fastbacks are indeed out there! In 1982 I was still working as an auto mechanic. After being laid off from a dealership (hard times= last one hired, first one fired!), I worked at a small garage for a family friend. A long time customer brought her car in to be worked on. It turned out she was a dental assistant, ironically enough, for our long time family dentist. She was the original owner of the car and much to my surprise...it was a Tahoe Turquoise '66 Sprint fastback with standard blue interior and automatic! It was untouched with everything there, chrome air cleaner, wire hubcaps and center console. IIRC, we did a tune up for her. While I saw it around town several times after that day, I went into the military and upon returning home, I've never seen it since.

Yes, The Sprint 200 Fastbacks are indeed hard to find.  Most were converted to V8 cars or lost over time. They are still out there though.. After all my 20+ years of shows, I have yet to be confronted with one!  I'll see a Sprint 200 convertible like my own once in a great while, and a Sprint 200 Coupe here and there.. All three Plants (Dearborn, Metuchen, and San Jose) produced Sprint 200's.  Unfortunately, No actual production data exists, Only estimates, A sad shame, since for 1966 models Ford punched up the DELETE key! (A Quote from Kevin Marti...as the 1966 Data DID in fact exist, Kevin just showed up a year or two after it had been deleted unfortunately, and met the actual guy who did the deed. ) We are surely grateful to him and Lois Eminger for the '67 to '73 data. If it wasn't for them, That data would be history as well.

Slight correction on my post. The interior color of the Sprint fastback was Aqua, not blue!  :-[

BTW, I my '66 coupe is a Sprint also. While it's going the way of  a lot of other 6 cyl cars (getting a V8 that is), I have photographed the various markings and details I found as I disassembled it. I'll be starting a new thread on this forum and post the photos there for reference purposes.

Hey Guys,
I've been documenting my May 1966 Sprint also as the disassembly continues. I'm trying something different on this car from my first 65. As I remove and document I'm restoring the part then boxing up for when I need it. I just finished documenting all the wire harness tags that I could find and in the process of making replacements.

By the way mine had chrome air cleaner(no snout), wire wheel hubcaps(blue ford insert), rocker panel mouldings, deleted side trim, car had been repainted so didn't find accent stripe, and full length console.

Dave, What's your VIN# and build date?  Mine is 6F08T352910, Built May 18th (18E). Maybe our cars were built days apart.. I could help you with certain details..

Mine is 6F08T354174, scheduled built date May 13th (13E). Interesting my scheduled build date is before yours but consecutive number is after yours. I've been documenting all the date codes which I hope to post soon. The earliest part built on my car is the left Inside quarter (3 12 B3), the latest dates are my seat belts which are week 21 1966 (2166 W6N) which I believe week 21 started May 22,1966.

Dave, I will post all of my Sheet metal dates and Seat belt Tag dates.  I was lucky to get an "all original" car untouched when I got her...That's why I bought her...

I'll post the dates here..

Weather is starting to get nice again here in Melbourne, FL, so I'll be working on her again soon.  I gutted the original interior (It was all there, but really worn!), and I'm re-doing the whole cockpit... I'm halfway there.  All my re-upholstery work is done except for the Rear interior Quarter Fiberglass panels. They will be fun to do... The rest of the car is really clean...and original as well.. I can't wait to get it back out on the road and up the insurance to like $20K-$25K for safety's sake..

         I just joined the forum,At The moment I own several 65-66 Mustangs (mostly v8's)but Two of them are Six cylinders.One of them is a Sprint. I have owned three other sprints as well. I would be very interested in hearing some additional info regarding the "Sprint" Registry. You had said that you were reviving the old Sprint registry,Did you contact Rick Mitchell and get info from him?Were you going to do a mailer similar to the old "sprint Print" and "Six Classics" ? I'd like to read/hear more about this.Thanks

I can't seem to get a a hold of Rick Mitchell. I have bad contact info on him. I have tried numerous times.  I have a new 1966 Sprint 200 website in the works, and I sure have plenty to put up on the site.  I'd like to get a hold of Rick to merge his existing data with mine.  If anyone has a good phone number or address for Rick, Please e-mail it to me at NEFaurora@aol.com .  I don't have a mailer planned.  I'm just still trying to build the website and get it off the ground in my spare time.  It is definately needed.

             I have never talked with Rick,But perhaps I could help you find some contact info? I assume you tried his address that was listed with the original registry? I have some old copies of "Six Classics" With contact info on them.I think it would be paramount to get in contact with him as I'm sure he could provide alot of insight and info. If you'd like to pm(unless you want to post what you have on here) me with the contact info you have I'll see If I can come up with anything? Either way I'd be intersted in joining when you get it up and running. Are you going to open it up to all 6's or just "Sprints"?
