I'm going, it will only be my 2nd show. Havn't been able to get to a show since Springfield a couple of years ago. Can't wait.

Having been to their last National in 2007 and their Grand National in 1997, all I can say is--this is a show not to be missed!

I also plan to be there.

Geez, I hope the wind stays away this time!  Last time was downright brutal!

Yeah, I got slammed by a door on a car while I was judging the interior and also ended up with major ear problems for six months afterward from the wind.  At least the tornados went around us.

Hello Pete !

Did  I hear you mention at the judges meeting in Pensacola  that you had made modifications to the judging sheets that we used ?

I am asking about the judging sheets because the new ones seemed to me and Kent Barker to be a little confusing.  In the past it seemed that they had a natural progressive order.  Inside the car, then the exterior, then the engine compartment, then the trunk area, then the undercarriage.  Now, and please remember, I am only a newly certified judge, and I will be the first to say that I am not the seasoned veteran that most of you are, but it seems that the new judging sheets take you from inspection the interior, to the exterior, to the engine compartment, to the trunk, to the front of the undercarriage,  to the back to the front, etc.  Kent and I both sensed a little confusion in the order of the posted inspections.

But, I will say that I do appreciate the fact that you are trying to make it better.  maybe it is just me and my lack of judging experience.

Sorry to hear that you had some judging sheet confusion in Pensacola.

The order of the judging sheet categories has not changed for quite a few (6+) years. The order is interior, then exterior, trunk, engine compartment, and last is undercarriage. This order makes the most sense because in order to check the warranty tag rules (on the first sheet of the judging packet), the team has to open the car door to verify the warranty information. Opening the door(s) one time is far better than multiple times. The remaining category order was put into place based on several senior judge's experiences with judging and the natural progression moving around the car.

The order of the rules within each category also has essentially remained unchanged for even longer than the categories.

Some thoughts for you to consider when judging next time...
For the exterior, the entire team should walk around the car and mentally note anything out of character and then meet towards the rear of the car to go through each rule, discuss, and write comments as necessary. Sometimes another walk to a particular part of the car is warranted for something missed or for a team review of something spotted during the first walkaround.

For the undercarriage, one team member should focus on the front end components/floors/etc. and another team member should focus on the back end components/floor/etc. For consistency, each judge should stick to the same undercarriage areas for every car in the class being judged.

As always, we are working to improve the rules and the process of judging. We accept constructive comments on how to improve. The annual judges meeting is a good time to discuss recommendations with the NHJs and ANHJs.

Regards,
Pete Morgan

OK Pete..thanks for your response !

I have always followed the lead of the Gold Card Judge(s) in the way we judge the car, and honestly , the 6 or 7 different times I have help judge, it was always done by having one person on the driver's side, one on the passenger side, and one being the scribe (clipboard carrier ).

Thanks for your help and input !
