Hi Guys,
Hopefully this is a nice easy one. I have not been able to find a clear reference to this in any of my sources so I thought I'd ask here. Simple question really - Does the brass adaptor for the temperature sender on the intake manifold of our 10/64 built SJ Convertible get painted Black with the block or was it installed later on down the line? If this was the case should I polish it and coat with a high temp clear gloss?
Thanks in advance,
Dan.

The adapter should be painted, I thought they were steel, not brass?

Thanks Charles. Fairly sure it's brass. I'll check and get back to you though.

I've only seen steel adapters. Bought a few a while back to have if needed.

This subject caught my interest, so I did some research. Using the 75 MPC, I looked in the illustration section under the electrical, engine and instrument sections, and then the same in the parts section. I found the manifold, the sender, the wiring (assembly manuals) but found no reference to the adapter. I know it exists, I have one on an engine (a 65 San Jose GT, "A" code, Fastback) to adapt the manifold to the small size sender. It appears to be a brass fitting. My 66 GT, "K" code, Fastback has the large sender.

First I looked in my 1966 Only MPC, and like you, found no Illustration of the Adaptor. I then looked at the Intake Manifold Text and found that the Service Package included with the 4 bbl Intake included (1) C5AZ-10911-A Adaptor (picture 1). I then looked for that part in the Text, but it wasn't to be found. I then went to my 1965 Only MPC (since the Part was a C5AZ part) and looked at the Intake Manifold Text and found what is shown in picture 2. I then looked for the C5AZ-10911-A part in the Text, and found what is shown in picture 3. A great description, but nothing on the material. Unfortunately, I have found that parts which normally should be a "Hardware" part, yet carry a "car" Part Number, usually don't have near the detail that one finds in the Ford Standard and Utility Parts Catalogs.

The 75 MPC shows part number C5ZD-10911-C (SW-757) with a description of "Screw in type - 3/8" - 18 external pipe thread x 1/8" - 27 internal pipe thread x 1/2" long - use with senders (10884) having 1/8" - 27 male ends", no material.
Note the "-C".

I guess it's an "engineering fix part" for a single year, limited application, not a multi year part. As such, it would be limited in distribution, not generally stocked.

It doesn't make sense for the 'after 8/20/64' note as I've only seen on style of adapter used from 64.5 through late '65.

Charles : I believe that the "Before and After 08/20/64" note only applies to the Intake Manifold itself. IE, using the earlier Intake did not require the Adaptor ?

I just did the "magnet" test on the "appears to be a brass fitting" fitting. Despite several tries, the magnet did not stick. Conclusion: it's brass (OK, not steel).
Speculation: With a "-A" listed in an early MPC and a "-C" listed in later versions, the "-A" would be the original in brass, and the "-C" is a steel replacement.

Magnet test results; mine is brass. Brian

Jim : That was my exact thought also. The "-A" is Brass, and the "-C" is steel. Who says great minds don't think alike ??

Remember - it's "speculation". Without the actual Ford engineering document we won't know.

Absolutely. That is why I qualified my comment by saying "my thought". :)
