Title: 1st Generation Wiring Questions? I have answers!
Post by: midlife on July 15, 2009, 09:06:28 PM
Some of you may know that I restore underdash harnesses to OEM functionality.  While gathering up all of the wiring diagrams available, I've managed to obtain (by reverse engineering) the 1967 and 1968 tach harness schematics.  There is no known public domain schematics for these critters.

In the course of restoring these old harnesses, I have found many bad molded plugs, particularly at the engine side of the firewall.  The crimps within these molded plugs are just poorly made.  I've also found that about 20% of the headlight, turn signal, brake switch, etc. pins are also poorly crimped, but at least one can re-crimp these puppies.  The molded connectors cannot be fixed.  Many of your problems may be due to these poor crimpings, leading to no continuity of circuitry.

I have many parts, connectors, pins, etc. that y'all may need in your restoration efforts.  In addition, I can probably answer any of your electrical questions you may have.  Feel free to use me as a resource, either here, or via e-mail at harnesses@fusemail.com

I'm at your disposal!

Sorry, Jake, but no.  I don't have any documentation for them and no harnesses to cannibalize for connectors if one crossed my workbench.

You certainly have a strange problem, and I'm scratching my head over the information you provided.  Your instrument cluster should work...

I now have the schematics and have actually refurbished a 78 Mustang in the past 6 months, so yes, I can do this!

Randy was great with providing information to check all circuits before powering up under load. All worked great. Thank you!

Last day to receive harnesses is May 23; I will be down until November/December timeframe.  I'll post when the business is backup and running.
Sorry for the inconvenience, but I do have to get the house and garage repaired due to damage from Hurricane Michael, which requires everything removed from the dwellings.

I feel for you.  32" of water from Hurricane Harvey set back the start of my little side businesses by about 18 months.  It does afford you the opportunity to make some changes/additions.

Unexpected circumstances sure can force us into a form of involuntary reorganization.  I hope the "reorganization" proves to (eventually) be beneficial to your business. Ten years ago, (ten years into business), I had to borrow money and move my business (this was to survive the economic crisis the whole country experienced back in the 2008/2009 time frame).

The move proved to be essential to my survival but I had to move into a smaller building...only recently have I finally gotten back into some of those boxes that were packed up nearly 10 years ago!

Certainly, I wouldn't want to go through this ever again but as they say: "What doesn't kill us, only makes us stronger.", it is great to here of your survival.

I hope you like heat. One of my neighbor's sons moved to Tempe after he retired from the Navy. "Everything", except the outdoors, is air conditioned.

I wonder if insurance is less given no hurricanes compare to where you are now.

Much lower insurance, but higher taxes (property, state income).  Desert landscaping is ideal for someone looking for low maintenance yards.  Heat don't bother me, as long as it is cool heat! ;D

Humid wet heat in FL. Dry heat in AZ. Wiring insulation and other interior parts gets french fried there on the other hand   less rust.

I'm on my way back from Tucson and spent 3 days searching for housing that might fit my needs.  Found 2 or 3, but were either in a terrible neighborhood or 10+ miles out of town with nothing nearby.  I ended up finding a very nice rental property for the time being, and I hope to move here by mid-November.

The bad news: I might not have space available to have the business up and running when I finally move in and settle.  I'll know more once I'm here.  I'll notify y'all what will be happening.
The real bad news: I'll still be here offering wise cracks and crummy advice.  Sorry 'bout that..

Well, I made it!  Arrived Monday afternoon, movers showed up at 8AM Tuesday, and have spent the rest of the week making the house livable.  Will have to get car registered, driver's license, and a AZ business license over the next couple of weeks, then work on the garage to make it usable for wire work.  Plan is to start back up Jan 1.

What part of Arizona?
Title: Re: 1st Generation Wiring Questions? I have answers!

Tucson, AZ.

There are a fair number of us repair/refurbishment/new part suppliers among Phoenix and Tucson (think Kevin Marti, Marcus Anghel, Bill Basore...).  Sorta like Silicon Valley, only for vintage FLM vehicles.

Welcome to Southern Arizona Randy. This is the good part of the year. When we moved here from the northeast years ago in July, it was 110 degrees. You get used to it eventually.

Welcome to the (sort of) Left West Coast. When you reach the work saturation point, and you will, I recommend Cabo San Lucas on the Baja tip. The diving and fishing there are worth the trip.

That's what LaurieS says as well.  But isn't that the South Coast of Kalifornia?

It's 750 miles "South Of The Border, Down Mexico Way". You are closer to the dreaded California border than that. If you go, consider flying. It's been a while since I was there, and with this virus stuff, who knows.

Randy here...
SUSPENSION OF REFURBISHMENT: I am in need of a hip
replacement, scheduled for early February.  I am in great pain
and can no longer spend time on my workbench repairing
wiring harnesses.  I will resume operations sometime after
surgery, so please check back approximately mid-March.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE

Randy,

Wish you a speedy recovery.  Just had one replaced in July and much better now.

My advice from my experience only is,

1. don't rush recovery
2. do your physical therapy as prescribed
3. do what the Doctor says you can and don't do what they say you cant, it sounds simple but some of it will be hard to obey.
4. STAY ACTIVE and MOVE around Ice is your friend
5. set up a nice bed about mid-thigh height where there are no stairs between you and it, same for bathroom and shower location.

Enjoy a future with no more hip pain.

Happy Holiday's
Dan in Kansas

Well, I have recovered fairly well from my hip surgery, and the wife's hip replacement was a month after mine, so she's well enough for me not to nurse her on a daily basis.  So, I'm now open again for business. Thanks for all your kind words and patience.
