Rear sway bar paint mark?
« on: October 17, 2015, 11:04:41 PM »
Pulled the sway bar today and gave a quick cleaning. I noticed the white paint on the side of the sway bar and it appears to be sitting on top of what's left of the original black paint. Could this be the remnant of a factory paint daub/mark? Just curious for those who may have a nice unrestored car with the paint marks still evident - to comment. Again the car is a'71 429cj convertible. Thanks

Drivers side of the sway bar (once installed)?

Most likely is the identification mark for the part - does match what the buildsheet identifies also for your type and year of car.

Nice find

Yes, driver side when installed. Would this mark have gone completely around the bar when new, of is it just a brushed on type mark as seen here? ..................

From the ones I've seen - no they were not always painted around the bar just on the bar for identification. Just a quick swipe of the brush and on to the next

I just replaced some bushings in mine.  It had an orange paint blob on it.

Yes different ID markings for different years and applications. My 71 CJ Cougar is same (basically) as mac1971 example just a different color for some reason (would have thought they were the same piece) similar swipe with the brush

Location for the 70-73 bars appears to be anywhere on that drivers side arm

No rear bar on my H code 72 mach.  That mark does look to be original, but I do not have any facts to base that on other than just simple appearence. I would thouroughly document its location with measurements and take several photos.  This will give you time to clean the bar and repaint in black while further research can be done.

Don't know if much more research is needed - seems that we've confirmed that the make is the right color (from the buildsheets) and the style and location matches other examples from 71.

My 71's mark is shown in the second post - fourth picture down
