Whiney noise from power steering
« on: February 26, 2017, 08:06:26 AM »
Looking for advice, I puchased a 65 A code, with air, 4 sped, teal blue reservoir for PS, a former MCA gold certified car so I am assuming everything is close to be correct.  There is a continuous whining noise from the PS when the car is running and appears to get worse the more it's driven. Tried bleeding it but didn't not help, any suggestions?  If it's the pump where is the best place to get a correct replacement or where to send this one to get it rebuilt? Thanks in advance for any help build date 19S, serial number 5FO8A73****, DSO 61

Here's another to throw in the mix.  I had my complete power steering system and steering gearbox rebuilt by CockoStang.  They did an excellent job.

When you call Roger Rode the first thing he will tell you to do is to change out the power steering fluid.  I think Roger likes the NAPA brand.  You should be good with Motorcraft Type F.  PS fluid has shown to be the cause of a lot of PS failures.  It was so bad that Cardone, the largest supplier of rebuilt pumps, had independent tests done to come up with a list of aftermarket fluids that met OE specs.

Thanks for your response, Roger was extremely helpful as we discussed my problem and as you noted he recommended changing out the fluid.  If this does not fix it I will definitely send the pump up to him.
Thanks again

what fluid did he recommend?  Mine is whining as well after a rebuild.  Not bad but enough to bug me.  I can try a flush...

So FORD suggested Type-F ATF in the 60's.

Wouldn't then ANY POWER STEERING FLUID BE INCORRECT?

Don't screw around.  You can still get Type F transmission fluid.  I just picked up a case of Motorcraft Type F at a Ford dealer in my area.  Some Ford dealers don't have it in stock but they can order it.  Many auto parts stores also have Type F.  One exception is NAPA that has Type F/A.  Supposed to be good for Type A and Type F applications.  No reason to go with any fluid besides Type F in your vintage Mustang power steering.

Don't think the newer type F is the same as what used to be available.  I've had good luck with modern type F with Lucas power steering stop leak and conditioner added.
I rebuilt a 67 pump with a NOS cam pack.  It whined with the type F alone, but replacing about 25% of the fluid with the Lucas instantly quieted it down and smoothed it out. I would give it a try first.

I'm running Motorcraft Type F in my rebuilt Eaton type pump power steering system.  It's quiet and performs well.  No complaints.  Seems like putting in an additive is just treating a symptom of a problem.  That said, I would do the same.

He recommends NAPA 75-205 because its thicker as he puts it. Ford type F is good too.
