69 Dearborn Running Change Thread - Cowl Color Body Color or Black

(1/2) > >>

Wade429:
Does anyone know when they went from body color paint to the black engine bay paint on the top of the firewall/cowl area?   My car was Dearborn built in mid May (14th)  of 1969, and I have seen cars both ways from around that time (KK 1801 to KK 1810).

Thanks,

Wade

J_Speegle:
Closest I have records and pictures of is from one with a projected build date of 15E (May 16th) Sorry don't have the Marti report for it for a real build date but (KK number about 30 cars after your range) it appears it was built after the range you identified

It was originally engine compartment black above the firewall to cowl pinch weld seam. Would say that the change from body color to blacked out changed when they changed the non- Boss 429 Dearborn built cars.  Earlier in the spring/late winter as discussed in other threads

Hope this helps

Sorry this is a low contrast comparison but you can make out that the cowl section is painted black not the shinny or smooth finish of the dusty exterior

wade I would paint cowl area blackout  as I have never seen a may 69 built Dearborn car body color cowl on original paint cars anyway.

Wade429:
Thanks for the reply.  Do you have any pictures of the blackout paint of the cowl/firewall on a Dearborn car from 1969?

Besides the one above yes plenty.

Here are a few more - All unrestored second half 69 Dearborn cars. On red cars it seems that the black was applied thin or the black just wears off/doesn't age as well as other colors
