66 Ragtop color
« on: November 28, 2017, 10:54:41 AM »
Hi all,

I was wondering if there is a way (or there was) to know the original top color for a 66 289 C-Code Vintage Burgundy Dearborn Convertible. Guess all was gone when Ford destroyed the information for 65-66 models, but maybe it’s worth to ask.. My car has it white, but have seen others in black color.
Thanks,

Josep

I must say it looks really nice with the white top. Other than having a buck tag or finding the paperwork in the car somewhere, I don't know of a way to determine the as-built color.  Maybe others have an idea.

There were two colors listed for 66 Convertible tops, black or white. Both were available with any exterior color. Based on that, it was the preference of whoever placed the order, or, lacking that, whoever punched the assembly line IBM card.

I've had two Vintage Burgundy convertibles in my family...Both were bought brand new off the showroom floor...The first was my Uncle's 1965 Vintage Burgundy Convertible with a 289 V8, C4 Auto, Black interior, and a Black Vinyl Top.   The 2nd car was my father's 1966 Vintage Burgundy Sprint 200 I6 Convertible with a Black interior and Black Vinyl top.  Interestingly enough, both cars had White side pinstriping painted from the factory.  Both cars looked like twins.  Both cars also had the Wire Wheel hubcaps from new also.   I've found that the Vinyl Top and Top Boot color usually matches the interior color.

Probably true, unless a special order stated otherwise. (There's no accounting for taste.)

Don't think it took a special order (with all the paperwork and such involved) just specifying that choice on the order form in this case. My understanding was (and believe it is supported in the instructions from Ford) that special orders only came into play when the buyer wanted something that was not a regular production option. Example if a buyer wanted a different rear end gearing that the "standard" gears it was just notated and did not require a Special order form or process and nothing special on the door tag

Maybe I should have said "customer order" instead of special. As I remember, all the new Fords I've ordered were "customer orders" from the dealer, not from dealer inventory, and all had a two number DSO. I missed out on seeing my 69 Mustang Sportsroof going down the assembly line in San Jose on Wednesday, May 7, 1969. Our "customer" (the USAF) scheduled a meeting I had to attend. I was pissed. The Major apologized when he found out.

Not an expert here, but what I have noted is that top boot and interior color normally matches, but not always the vinyl top..
