Color for steering parts
« on: December 02, 2017, 05:31:17 PM »
Need some help determining the correct paint color (if any) for the steering box, pitman and idler arm in my 1965 Mustang Fastback (5R09Kxxxxxx) with scheduled assembly date of February 1965.  I have all the parts out of the car, de-greased, detailed and ready to paint.  Many thanks for some advice.

Trick question - they were not painted.

Each was bare metal and the finishes were determined by how they were made (cast, machined, heat treated)  and treated.  Some of the parts will have multiple finishes (example steering box will have cast surfaces, machined purposes and a plated plug) so painting normally is difficult to get one finish that is close but near impossible to get multiple ones.

Plenty of discussions of how to finish and protect as well as personal experiences and failures shared in earlier threads There is also an article in the Library that covers reproducing natural finished  Believe its titled Natural Finishes - Reproducing that covers for an example redoing a set of later tie rods

Since your asking specifically about 65  this is just one of the threads that might be helpful. Search is your friend most of the time :)
