Paint Daubs found on Steering Box and Kelsey Hayes Brake Valve
« on: February 06, 2018, 10:27:08 PM »
I didn't see the a reference for paint daubs on the steering box or this brake valve listed on page 164-165 of Tony Gregory's fourth edition.  Has anyone seen these paint daubs before?

Brake valve: orange/red? and white

Steering box HCC AX:  light blue?

If you soak the steering box casing in evapo-rust, the markings will show up a lot better.  There are varying markings, it's generally recommended to just put back what you find.

The Ford Master Parts Catalog usually lists the color daubs for wheel cylinders.  The one in your pic looks like a possible replacement.  Originals would be either Bendix of K/H.  Guessing this is a rear wheel cylinder?

Would recommend using the Gregory book with caution, there are many errors... the problem with printing reference/restoration material.

For an -AX 66 high ratio non-PS steering box - Yes have seen the light blue before along with the possibility of three color marks total. If the box was black out with a brush from above much or all of these can be covered in that process

Don't recall seeing red.  It's not a Shelby thing, would have just been unique to however the HCC-AX boxes at San Jose were being marked during the production year.  I've found yellow/blue on earlier '65 AX boxes and then blacked out on the top.  Pink on the shaft, about in the middle.
