Title: Early 1965 Correct Water Pump?
Post by: 66RavenGTCoupeAgain on February 09, 2017, 07:20:40 AM
Oct 20 1964 SJ Build. 289 A Code.

SORRY GUYS> MODIFIED DATE TO 1964

Hi all,
I have heard that I am supposed to have an aluminium water pump. Is this true and does anyone have a part number? Also, are there concours reproductions and if so where can I get one please?

I believe they switched over to the cast iron water pump around May of 65....Are you wanting early 65 or early 66?  Oct 20 1965 build would be 66...Keep in mind the timing covers are different for an aluminum water pump vs a cast iron...

Oct '65 would be a '66 model and the changeover happened several months prior, so your car should have a cast iron pump.

There are no 'concours' reproductions of water pumps.  You have to find an NOS one or have an original rebuilt.  The latter is the most practical and cost effective (usually).

Also keep in mind the difference in engine build date vs. chassis/car build date. The engine would have been built prior to the build date of the car at the assembly plant . It is especially important to consider when trying to make a judgement call on a narrow window of time like what is being discussed. In this case without knowing the engine build date and extrapolating solely by the car build date (FYI build date=completion date not start date) I think a C6 casting cast iron pump would be more appropriate then a C5 cast iron waterpump. Others my think differently.

Sorry Guys Build date is 20 Sept 1964. My mistake. Turns out Engine is not original anyway. Assembly date is 8th of July 1965. I have an aftermarket water pump on her and am looking for the correct one for my block. Part numbers and pictures would help a lot.
Thanks.

Looks like our cars are about a month apart based on schedule build date. I can't read my assembly build date of the engine as the AC and bracket are in the way and I don't remember what the date was that was stamped when I took the oil pan off a couple of years ago.  This isn't the original water pump for the car but it was the closest date code I could find at the time.
