1969 Boss 429 Air Cleaner Base
« on: December 08, 2023, 06:48:55 PM »
Did the 1969 Boss 429 air cleaners change bases like the 428 CJ cars?

The 1969 model year saw a running change that took place around 17 February 1969, when the air cleaner base was changed because of an issue with the automatic choke coming off too soon, causing a driveability and emissions problem. Ford added a vent to the heat tube for the choke to help keep the choke on longer. The choke tube was redesigned to include a tee and a hose was added to connect the tube to a thermal vent mounted in the bowl of the air cleaner. Air cleaners with the thermal vents also had a small strap spot welded to the outer edge of the bowl to support the hose. The change was described in TSB #114, Article 1780, issued on 2 May 1969.

Most of the Boss 429 air cleaners I see are the early style CJ base without the extra indent. Just want to make sure I have the correct air cleaner on my May 14, 1969 built Boss 429. If a change was made, around what time would it have applied to the Boss 429 cars?

Thanks,

Wade

Best way to know is find cars with born with air cleaners on them as i always make notes on unmolested cars when i find them to document  changes. I think my theory about first 500 cars would hold true on early flat bases but kk plant didnt care and depends on how inventory was used up and build sheet is no help so a may car could be either way but i would expect starting in late kk 1700 and into kk 1800s to have the late type hump base showing up.

Anyone with an original car from that time frame (early KK1800, mid May, 1969 build) that can confirm which air cleaner their car has?

Thanks,

Wade
