C8AF 12127-J distributor discussion
« on: November 20, 2016, 03:55:11 PM »
Looking for a 7M date code please. 4 speed car.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this is the distributor for my Jan built GT500.

Would prefer a restored one as it would save me some time.

Chris
Isn't a single diaphragm advance  C8AF 12127-J typically for a auto?

Well now that you mention it Bob, that's kind of what I thought. After asking around and some light reading (registry) I came to the conclusion that this is the correct distributor for the GT500. This is what is listed on page 1459 of the registry and it is the same distributor on a recent(last three years) division 2 gold car. I asked to be corrected in my want ads on more than one forum, but did not receive any responses.

If it is the wrong one and someone can show me why I am more than willing to locate the correct one.

Anybody???  All help is much appreciated as I am shooting for Indy concourse.

Chris

That distributor part number is shown in the 75 Ford Car Parts, section 120, page 5, page 23, section 120.4G, as being used on 1968/69 428 full size Fords and Police Cars (P/C) with a C6 AT and T/E. Is the distributor a factory installed item on Shelby Mustangs? It's possible. The book says no. The book says C8OF-D for 428 Q and R code M/T engines for 68 Mustangs (I assume that's your year). Comments should be addressed to "the book". Any documented variations will be happily incorporated in the Distributor Spreadsheet located in the Forum's Library.

Bob, are you thinking of the C8OF-J for 1969 GT500 auto? I'm referring to the C8AF-J.

To clarify my car is a January GT500 4 speed "S" code 428. I looked through the distributor spreadsheets when I was originally researching. I did not see an "S" code 428 or the C8AF-J distributor part number in the sheet.

All GT 500s in 68 used C8AF J with single vacuum. Let's move discussions to specific forums

Yes , I forgot about the C8AF-J otherwise I would have included addition identification letters.  . C8OF-J is 69CJ . Thank you for the catch.

This is a transplanted discussion from the WANTED section that got started. So trimmed those posts and will add them here  to keep things tidy and easier to find in the future

The only "S" code engine I'm aware of is a 390 (and 390 GT). The rumor mill has a story that due to the unanticipated popularlty of the 68 Shelby GT-500, Ford substituted a 390 for the 428, intending to install the correct 428 later.
Comments.

"Myth-Busters" lives. Thanks for the clarification.
Code "S" for 68 428 entered into the Distributor spreadsheet with some references including the C8AF-J distributor. Thanks for the assistance.
I hope you don't mind me being nit-picky. I prefer to be accurate, with sources of course.

I will add my 30 years of dealing exclusively with 1968 Shelbys.

All GT500s used the single pull diaghram on the C8AF-J distributor, regardless of transmissions.

There were NO GT500 factory 390 cars, but they did use the "s" engine code as noted in the paperwork above.

Don't mind at all. It will be easier for the next person. Glad I could contribute.
