64 1/2 Mustang Radiator Support Help needed
« on: March 31, 2011, 01:55:41 PM »
Hi. My name is Scott and this is my first post. I'v been around a while and i have a 64 1/2 that has had the Radiator support replaced and some one did a hack job on it. I want to replace the radiator support and front cross member, But no one makes the rad. support with the 3 louvers for the generator cooling. I can get one cut off a 64 1/2 car that has the 3 louvers, But i'd rather buy a new one and stamp out these louvers. Anyone ever punch out these louvers? OR anyone got a pattern or a dimension for these louvers. I only have a picture of a 64 and my 64 doesn't have the louvers. I'm including some pictures. The mustang on the rotisserie is my 64 and the other is a 64 with the 3 louvers stamped in the rad. support.  Tks Scott

Had/have a louver press but the dies are not exactly the same as the ones used in this application.  I would go with a set cut from another car (just weld in a small repair panel or cut out the whole radiator support from a 64 1/2 and transfer that into the car - in that way you might have a good date code to go with it also

Just a couple of thoughts

Another option is cutting the louvered section out of an original radiator support and grafting it into the one on your car.  Or, replacing the entire rad. support with an original louvered piece.

Tks Jeff and Charles. I can get a section of the louver area cut out of a rad. support for 150$ and If my rad. support had the louvers, I would save that money.  I would consider cutting and welding in the louver area into a new support. And Charles, If the rad. support was available with the 3 louvers i would Buy in in a New York Second.
So as it goes it's like this.
#1  130$ for a louverless Rad. Support with Front Cross Member. New
#2  150$ for a section of the Louver area   Used   Add 1 & 2 = 280$
#3  350$ for a front end cut off a louverd Rad. Support with Front Cross Member.Used

Option #3 would include enough material to get the pieces i need But cutting spot welds and prep'ing the sheet  metal will be like double the work since i have to do it to the car as well.

Another option, Do #1 and punch the louvers the best i can or make a 3 time use die and not heat treat the dies. and poss. make a louver punch to do this one time deal. I have seen a home made louver punch made on youtube and i think i could do it.

But to do the louver punching i would need some measurement's or a pattern on the louvers witch i don't have access to. Tks for your input. C-ya Scott

150$ for a section of the Louver area?? I would keep looking, 150 is a total rip-off. I bought the entire inside back seat area for a buddy for $50 out of a rear clip in a mustang yard. You can find it cheaper. All you need to do is locate a 64.5 and have a battery powered sawzall. You can easliy cut out that piece in no time.

I do not have easy access to my 64.5 or I would be happy to give you mesurments or even make you a template. Next time I go to the yard if you have not found one, I will be happy to ask what he would take for that part and let you know.

Yep. 150$. Got a buddy at work that has a mill and said he'd make me a set of dies to make my louvers. Yes on if you find a 64 with the louvers and cut it out. My contact is 303-507-2754. That would b prefect to be able to copy the louvers and all that's needed to stamp out some scrap to make sure they look like the original ones. Tks Scott

Here are the markings from the front of the support. It was an early JUNE coupe, Plain Jane with a 170 Auto. Pegoda Green with Black interior.

Scott, I think your gonna be happy with it!

I was thinking my fastback... :o

The Coupe was indeed an early JUNE 64.5 car. Sorry about that, I changed my statement above.

Got the Rad Support from Brian today. The FedEx guy delivered it and said, (i don't think there's a t. v. in that box) Then my Wife explained what it was to him. He said COOL. Now to strip it down, Straighten out a few thing's and blast it and get it ready for the Stang. Tks Brian

Scott,
No problem and hope you like it! I figured it was better then $150 for a small square of vents. Haha you got the entire area shipped to you cheaper than that  ;)
