serial number stamping on 4 speed transmission

is there a serial number stamped on the transmission with vin as on the hipo block? uh , 4 speed heh bx

Yes, normally the VIN would be on the trans also.

Yes, there is supposed to be a VIN on the toploader HP transmissions. However, some, or many, or all (a debate rages) Metuchen built HP Mustangs seem to not have a VIN stamped transmission (engines are included in the debate). If it is stamped, it should be on the bottom of the transmission. This includes HEH BX and HEX T boxes, the latter "T" being found after the change over date. The C4 did not get a VIN stamp.

Wasn't suppose to be just on K codes but according to records any vehicle with a 4 speed produced after 1963 if I recall correctly. Anti thief/identification purposes

Incidental information: I found a replacement T-10 transmission in a San Jose 66 Mustang that had a Metuchen VIN, 6T07A170383. It was a HEK-AD. The stamping was on the adaptor between the main body and tail piece.

Both the original 66 T10 and the replacement toploader that I got that was date correct for my Metuchen GT did not have a VIN stamp.

I thought that it became legally required in 67 or 68?

I have no VIN on the original block or HEH BX. Maybe it was supposed to happen but Metuchen seems to be where it was often missed.

1968 was when it was Federally mandated.

That was for all engines and transmissions. Before that (a Federal programs) most of the car makers marked performance related engines and or transmissions since they felt those were more likely targets and they likely also help identify them for warranty issues if need be since those were likely used a little harder than non-performance. Same books I have that identify the change/start of the 68 all engine/trans programs stated what I wrote earlier

Have always wondered why the Ford number wasn't stamped into the aluminum
T-10's in 65 Shelbys.  The blocks had them but as far as I know, no trans had the
serial number.

Why did Ford put the inferior transmission in the Mustangs that were destined to become Shelbys?

Those T-10's were aluminum casings, IIRC, and built up a bit over the normal T10's, or so I've been told. 

The T-10's tend to wear with age and pop out of gear; as old trannies, they become inferior to the toploader.  When first installed and used, they were considered one of the stoutest trannies out there until the toploader was developed.
