replating taillight housings
« on: July 11, 2010, 10:15:35 AM »
Finally found a decent rust free pair of taillight housings. Does anyone have a source for having these replated? Also how do I go about getting the socket for the taillamp removed so the housings can be plated?

I laid the housing flat and used a 1/2" chrome socket from my tool set that was the same outer diameter as the brass light socket and tapped it lightly with a hammer inward until it came out. Actually moved quite easy. I used Steve Gregori from brakeboosters he did my re-plating, website below.

Thanks Dave! Did you send them in as is or blast them for him? the backs are pretty clean, but there is a bit of surface rust on the bottom of them. Thanks again! Dave

I blasted with glass beads and then sanded any rough spots I had. The smoother finish you provide the better the plating will look. You'll notice there's rubber around the studs where they are pressed into the housing. Don't worry about it as the plating will not affect the rubber.

Dave-I looked at their website and read about the different plating. I also need to get the door latches replated. I have some crummy taillight housings I can practice on to remove the sockets. Thanks Again! Dave

I removed the sockets pretty much like Dave did, let them soak with a shot of WD-40 overnight first. I've also used Steve Gregori several times for plating, mostly clear (silver) zinc. He's always done a great job.
