Title: 69 grille
Post by: DEWilson on August 09, 2017, 06:41:37 PM
Hi  i see in past post that the grill is stated to be painted and code is ppg 32947  so have found it is called charcoal gray    have found this mix code was also used on 73 -78 Pontiac wheels trim paint.. so what i am looking for is if there is any pic of the 69 grille showing factory paint

I don't know who said that, but my original 69 plastic grill is just plain black plastic.
I still have my car bought over 36 years ago as an unrestored original.
Sounds like the same idea as those steering wheel restoration companies painting them when they're colored plastic to begin with.

Ditto on the black plastic grill.  The headlight surrounds were dipped in black paint.  Brian

The color came from a paint chart from the period if I recall correctly.  None of the originals (non-NOS) I've had were strong black like other plastic parts on the car that were black by comparison

Don't recall seeing evidence of drips or run off from dipping of the inner (high beam) light rings. Will dig some out to see what I can find when I can get to them

Yes recall the discussion. We're not always going to agree on everything but that's ok ;)

Current MCA rules state painted low gloss Black. Service grills early 80's and later were unpainted shinny black plastic. I have 6 unrestored cars here with painted grills. The paint is ultra thin and could be mistaken as unpainted. I have no SJ cars with original grills for reference. If you have a original unpainted grill that is low gloss black plastic with original 1st mold  markings you have a rare find.

I agree here they should be painted.  This is something we see at judged events all the time that grills are installed unpainted.  Both 69 and 70 grills are painted.

I just checked my grill and it shows no evidence of ever being painted. Its the same grill that was on the car the day I drove it off the lot in 68, no paint.

Maybe Perkins' comment explains this?

I have an chrome faced grille. It is clearly also painted. The broken middle grille is, I believe, an older replacement part. It was pretty gloss, but the plastic was hard, so it was old. The bottom grille is a new Daniel Carpenter reproduction.

Is the charcoal color from the sun exposure?  Is the chrome in the grill only a Grande option?  We have been dipping the headlight metal sleeve sockets for as long as I can remember.

Is the charcoal color from the sun exposure?

Likely the much lighter color is a result of sun, age and exposure to the elements in general. You can see what appears to be "wear" through in a number of areas
