original dashpad identification (1966)
« on: April 11, 2010, 09:28:46 AM »
I was offered a 66 dashpad from someone who's buying a new one and i don't know whether it is an original one or a repro. Unfortunately i don't know how to identify an original one. A friend of mine assumed that there should be a part number on the bottom, painted in blue paint - is this right? Are there any other details on the original ones the repros don't have?

Here are the photos i got from the seller, perhaps you can tell me whether it is original or not, I'd really appreciate it:

I already asked the seller about the part number but i have no answer yet.

Thanks!

Panther, I have attached some pictures from the underside of my original 1966 dash pad and it shows the markings. I'm not the expert but I believe originals/nos pads had the holes notched out for the speaker and air ducts. I purchased a black NOS pad for my 65 and the holes were notched like my original 66.

Originals were definitely notched along the top edge for the screws.  This is hit and miss on service replacement pads.  Also, original '66 pads will have an indent on the bottom edge where the screws attach.

It should pretty much look like Dave's pad as pictured.  There will be stamped dates in ink and also stamped in the forward front underside edge of the vinyl plastic.  Sometimes there will be Aluminum adhesive backed trim tags on the backside of the foam also.  Mine had two attached to the foam on the underside.

As I said, Dave pad is pretty much what you should look for..

Thank you all very much for the information and the pictures!
It was a great help to decide whether to take the pad or not (i did not).
