Rear axle gaskets for axles - double?
« on: August 30, 2015, 03:30:09 PM »
Please see the attached pictures from the Jan 67 MPC and 67 shop manual.  Both show double gaskets, item 1001 in the picture from the MPC, labeled simply as "gasket" in the shop manual.

Has anyone noticed this before?  Thoughts on doubling up the gaskets?  Thanks, John

Not shown in the diagrams is the backing plate.  So, to your question, yes.  Brian

Marty, one of the gaskets is steel?  Can you elaborate?

The metal one on the left goes between the back plate  and the axel housing and the paper one goes between the back plate and the axel retainer.

Thanks Marty.  Have not seen one in steel but have only taken two apart.  I see that NPD sells paper ones for each applications.

From the factory they were typically paper gasket material. I can't confirm if the metal ones I have seen were factory or replacement. The shape of the paper one in the previous picture conforms with the shape of the metal plate that is on the axle . The gasket is sandwiched between the metal plate that holds the axle bearing in the tube and the backing plate. Typically one goes on the front side of the backing plate and one on the back.

I just rebuilt the rear end off my 68 Cougar (12/67 SJ built) and puzzled over that diagram for a while. It was pretty much a factory original car and I found remnants of paper material on both adjoining surfaces - although they were pretty degraded - so reassembled as shown with both paper gaskets together.

My car is Dearborn built 11/68, 9 inch axle. Would it have both gaskets on each side?

My 67 nine inch also had paper on both sides of the backing plate.

The diagram shows both gaskets with the same base number 1001. However there are two different gaskets, one metal and one paper. The prefix and / or suffix are different. So they are not the same part number. Both are available from aftermarket sources.
