Oil Cap
« on: June 26, 2010, 01:51:07 AM »

I've noticed magazine factory photos and review photos of 84 SVO's have a plain black oil cap but the service cap has a yellow ENGINE OIL FILL label. My 10/83 84 SVO has a plain black oil cap, part number E3ZE-6766-CA.

Any 84 original owners have an oil cap w/ the label?

Trying to figure out if mine had a label and it came off or if there was a change sometime in the production.

Sure...sorry for the poor quality, it's all I could find quickly.

Here's what I typically see on 84's (and 83, 84 TBird TC's)

This seems to be common on 85+ SVO's.

I've read, and I could be wrong, but apparently in 84 or 85 Ford started marking owner serviceable parts with yellow. This is why the oil filler caps, power steering caps coolant overflow etc have yellow letters. That may explain why the early ones are plain and the service parts have the yellow sticker. I have an NOS 81 Escort cap that is plain black.

On another note, the flat caps appear to be correct for the 84 and the thicker cap Greg shows appears to be correct for the 85-86

The cap was changed from the early styles tendency to "dry the rubber" (become hard to remove).

As shown assembly part (for 85.5/86) shows the oil symbol , service has writing.

The yellow call out continues today - in hopes that people READ before putting oil in washer bottles !
