1965 Wheel/Disc Brake Question
« on: July 04, 2017, 05:20:08 PM »
My 1965 2+2 with a January 19, 1965 build date came with front disc brakes.

1) Are the factory steel ( NOT styled steel ) wheels different for disc brake cars VS drum brake cars ?

2) How do I identify if I have the correct wheels still ?

Thanks !

1. Yes, I believe they are.  A long time ago, in 1968, I had a 65GT coupe, and had a flat tire up front.  I put on the spare, and I could not move the car as the wheel was tight against the disc caliper.  I could put that spare on the rear, though.
2. I was going to say if the wheel spins on the front clearing the caliper, then at least it fits.  Whether it is OEM correct or not depends upon the factory markings, and I'll leave that to others to describe.

Difficult to describe the differences in words but images (and markings) will be your best way to ID disc-brake wheels. Visually, the best description I can put to words is: The area between the dog-dish hubcap lugs and the outer ring of the wheel is "flatter" on a disc wheel and more rounded on the drum brake wheel.
