Best way to clean undercarriage
« on: February 05, 2014, 12:47:39 AM »
So I want to try and start cleaning 49+ years of dirt and grime from the undercarriage of my Mustang.  The rear differential has a lot built on it and i can see some red oxide underneath it.  I also want to do the floor plans as well...What's the best method to use?  Would a steam cleaner work or should I go down the chemical route?  I'd like to try and preserve what is under there to see if any markings present themselves.

Thanks,
Chris

Imstarted with a 3500 psi pressure washer and it blew tons of stuff off. If you can use a strap cleaner the heat will remove even more,of the gunk

Round here - well most of the time it depends on access. Most of the time no big floor drains or ability to pressure wash all of the areas so its all by hand.

Start with something like simple green and use wax and grease remover on the hard spots. Of course in a well ventilated area.

Three passes then a little cheap car wax (with cleaner) often makes it look like new ;)

Would be interesting to try one of the new steam cleaners to see how those work

Just happened to watch a demonstration of such a thing in Jay Leno's Garage yesterday. He used it everywhere - outside, inside, engine bay...

Saw the clip over on the Cal Spec site - one of the reasons I mentioned it - and wondered how it would do on an old crusty car verses a well kept car:)

Sure someone will give it a try
