Engine compartment color - 1970 Mustang
« on: March 22, 2010, 07:47:36 PM »
This seems like such a silly question that I'm a little embarrassed to ask.  The engine to my 1970 Mach 1 is currently being rebuilt.  I would like to steam clean and paint the engine compartment before I install the engine.

What type of black paint was used in the engine compartments in 1970?  Is there an "equivalent" color that comes in a spray can?  (I know some of you are cringing at that last question but I don't currently have the ability to apply automotive paints unless they are in an aerosol can.)  :-\

Thanks for any help you can offer.

You want to go with a semi gloss black paint and if you can only use aerosol cans I would recommend SEMS trim black and it will get you pretty close. SEMS products are available at most auto paint stores. Another thought is a new product I am starting to see is a aerosol can with a button on the bottom and when pushed in will activate a catalyst (hardener) and this will be much more durable however it's a one time shot as it will harden in the can in a few hours but you will use several cans anyway. I don't know if this is available in a semigloss black at this time but it would be worth checking into with a auto paint jobber. Don't forget to buy a good paint resperator while your at it, I use the 3M dual cartridge disposable ones, they last about 40 hours of use and are comfortable enough to use for other things that require a mask like sanding dust etc..

Not sure if there are any good (will hold up over the long haul) choices in rattle cans. Guys often used, in the past, the Krylon but that has been reformulated so its not longer usable IMHO. Always flattened with any exposure or just over time. The trim black IMHO scratches with ease - good thing its easy to touch up ;)  Eastwood rattle cans and blacks to my eye have a slight muddy brown look to them.
