Title: 67-68 Select-Aire Air Conditioning Underdash Details
Post by: 67gtasanjose on April 14, 2016, 12:45:40 PM
I am presently detailing the heater/air conditioner case of my 67 Select-Aire system and wished to start a thread covering the many details found "hidden" when working on this. Mostly for documentation of any details that may be discovered on various build data to include running changes.

I know there was a running change for 68's in the case itself but I do not know the date the change went into effect. This change is noticeable where the two halves of the case come together. 67 early the long seam (facing you if mounted in the car) is essentially a straight seam where as the later (68?) version, the right-most edge bends off level (kinda like a hockey stick), not fully a straight diagonal seam the whole length like the earlier ones do.

Maybe there are other changes, I do not know but I just recently took two of the early versions apart and I will be posting some images of what I have found, including date code information (tags & ink stamps) where or when I find them.

Sorry Richard - just for clarification - you doing 67 and 68?

Since this appears to be a thread for you findings I'll wait until you get going and if you need some additional observations or pictures I help when asked :)

Yes, I'll be posting results from just the two 67, earlier version that I have on hand but there are many pieces that interchange or are the same between the two years (or versions) so I was hoping to try and demonstrate a few of those "not so obvious" differences here. (meaning covering both 67 and 68)

This being said, anyone adding to this post is welcome but for those participating, it may help to have some of the production date info included (if know) or stated as unknown.

I'll try and upload some images this evening after work

Here are some markings from outside of the evaporator case.

Some black tape over top of the thermostatic control wire. If anybody else has pictures of this tape it would be great to see it I am only seeing remnants of maybe where the glue was at.

Interesting. I wonder why there would be a difference between a V8 and a 6cyl AC evaporator case? I have never seen one with the tags still on it.

This may be one of those "the world may never know, Tootsie-Pop" questions but my thoughts (purely speculation) are that parts of the assembly that come through the cowl (hoses, expansion valve, angles of the lines) may have differed between 8 cylinder cars & straight 6 cars and since they likely came prepaired for direct installation on the assembly line, primarily "ready" for a quick installation, this seems to have a little logicistical merit. There have been other discussions about factory quick disconnect points, I have always wondered if they may have actually been pre-charged with the freon (like many "home" HVAC systems do today).

Don't want to get off thread but a quick mention - on 69-70's the cases are marked for the application (size of engines) also. They are grouped but there is at least two different ones. Don't know the internal differences

A set of very early 68 air conditioning set of pics and stamps . . .
I might have the door  tag for this car somewhere, if required.

On all pics, click to see the Flickr pic and click there to zoom.

It appears there is more than one way to stamp and white decal the case. Here the 8 cyl stamp is upside down to the previous poster's pic. The tape area on this one is also missing, but your can make out the outline on the case and the brighter area on the line:

Here is the module that directs air to the center and side vents (I don't know its name, but I sure one of you do):

And fan motor:

I have pics of all of the parts of the system including the wiring, hoses, through wall, etc if that's of interest too.

[on edit]
Added a pic of the fan case with its marking next to the diaphram:

[on another edit -- to specify it's a very early 68 case and fan motor section.

I could not make out the date on the case but that is a 68 style case.

I changed the post heading and on edit to specify a very early 68.
Thanks for the eagle eye.
Been spending all day on the 67 ...

Might as well add to this thread based on the title, and since this particular item is very small in the big scheme of things.

To replace the AC control head foam tape, which was self adhesive, should I just pick up any old product from a store that has building products?

From what is left it appears to have been black in color, and between 1/4 and 3/8" wide.  1/4" thick maybe?

Was applied on the back of the assembly, both the left and right hand sides, and would be compressed when making contact with the dash.  Only one side is shown in the picture.

Yes it was a open cell foam tape 1/4 -3/8 thick. You should find it in most home improvement stores. If you can not find it in the with you need it is easy to cut a wider one down.
