Title: 1967 Fastback Trunk Spring Insulators - All Plants
Post by: J_Speegle on September 09, 2017, 06:17:28 PM
This detail came up when looking at pictures for another thread so thought I would share with our members. Maybe it will help others restoring or judging these cars in the future

It has been noted and mentioned that at San Jose workers had installed an "extra" insulator (or tootsie roll as some call it),  originally designed to be used at the center of the trunk spring to lid bracket, to the drivers end of the spring. Its believed that this was done so that the spring did not slip out of the drivers side trunk hinge during spring installation.  So in looking at original 67 fastbacks built at all three plants it appears that someone from San Jose shared this trick or help with the others as the application can be found through the whole year of 67 production at all three plants for fastbacks using the single trunk spring rod.  Sine the spring was installed prior to the exterior painting the insulators (one at the drivers end and one at the center retainer bracket) would both be painted on Mustangs as shown in just a small sample shown below.
