Title: Correct Alternator drive belt - 68' 390GT no AC
Post by: mungus on September 12, 2017, 07:20:44 AM
My car has the dual belt alternator pulley. Without A/C.

MARTI supplied 1 x C5AE-8620-S belt. So I need a second one.

Given how long he can take to send out orders (months in my experience), I have been looking for an alternative supplier.
However apart from Cobranda's, every other listing I've found for my 390GT w/o A/C says a C5AE-8620-L.
However some state its for a 1967...

So which is correct? Or are they both correct and both fit side by side?

NPD lists a C5AE-8620-S for a 68 390 W/O AC part #8620-27

Yes I know, it's already in my wish list on their site. I emailed them for photos as it could easily be an equivelant. But no reply as yet. Thanks for the pointer anyway.

What I'm asking is which PN is concours correct. I'm guessing Kevin MARTI would be right.

Don't assume it will match what you have. The reason why I say is I have bought two K code 65/66 alt Marti belts one is about a inch longer then the other. I believe they use a close equivalent belt which could go ether on the slightly shorter side or slightly longer side . In my case one of the belts is too long and at the end of adjustment when installed all other things being equal. I would hate to have to hope for a exact match to match up with what you have . It could happen but I think it is a gamble vs a certainty IMHO.

iirc double belts were originally sold in exact matched pairs. don't know about nowadays since i don't have a call for them.

Thanks Bob,

I did wonder about that too. Earlier today I ordered a pair of C5AE-8260-s's from Cobranda's.
That will give me 3 and hopefully with 2 from a similar time of manufacture, a reasonable chance of a practical match.
If not? Well then I guess I'll have 2 correct spares!

iirc double belts were originally sold in exact matched pair.

I went through this with my 390 GT a few years ago.  The 1968 428CJ lists the correct belts as C6AE-8620-L. Remember the 390GT and 428CJ share the exact pulley set up.  I bought mine from Marti as a matched set!

C6AE-8620-L, not C5AE-8620-L

Weird, although good news as that "L" suffix belt is easy to get. Even my local Mustang shop has them. :-)

However MARTI themselves supplied the "S" suffix belt for my 390GT and Cobranda's still sell them and listed them for my 68' 390GT.

As an aside I visited the house of the late Richard Smykay yesterday and (has several lovely S codes) who had amassed quite a stock of "correct" parts over the years.
He had 3 "S" suffixed belts on the shelf,  ex MARTI's, and labelled for 390GT.

So who knows! Maybe the S belts were up to a certain date? Or maybe the present day "L" replicas only became available in the last year or 2?
Still I figure based on the current state of affairs, both are correct enough! :-)
