Can someone help me out with a detail on a coil? I'm trying to figure out what the correct 4 letter and/or number date code would be on the coil's ink stamp. The car is from May, 1966.
I don't understand how to decode those 4 letters or numbers.
Thanks for the help,
John Thomas

The format is typically 5EAB, which would decode to:
5=year of the decade, could be 65, 75, 85, etc...
E=Month, in this case, 5th letter, 5th month-May
A=Week of the month, A-first
B=Shift
So, a date stamp like 5EAB would mean first week of May, 1965, B shift.

Thanks very much for the info. One more question... how closely would you guess the coil date should match the date the car was produced? (same month, a couple of months earlier?)
Thanks again,
John Thomas

If I saw one 6 months earlier than the projected build date (all we have on the judge field at MCA) I would not find fault.

John,
I have a topic "Date Codes" in the First Generation 1964 1/2- 1973 Board on this forum. My May 1966 was 6EBC.
