67 parking brake component finishes
« on: January 27, 2017, 09:40:11 PM »
Looking for finishes for the following 67 parking brake components:

1. 2A790 connector
2. 2A808 idler
3. 2A605 equalizing lever
4. 2A602 equalizer
5. 2628 equalizer rod. Note that the one in the picture shows a faded gold finish compared to the other components.  Also note what appears to be a FoMoCo stamp on the rod.

Not found during a search.

IMHO the equalizing lever was phosphate and oil, the other parts were bare steel. The equalizing lever with plating was a service part.

P/O on 3 . I would do P/O on 1,2,4,and 5 also. They could be bare steel or P/O but P/O is more maintenance friendly.  Service parts are typically plated cad or zinc . Just my observations .  Others may have different.

Thanks for the replies.  Bare steel certainly has its challenges.  P&O makes sense, providing some form of protection.

FYI the oil part of the P&O is the most important part of the equation. ;)

Actually, it's part of the entire process. If the phosphating is not done properly, the oil may wash the phosphating off. You need clean, dry, non-oily and bead blasted (or tumbled) parts to succeed. A contaminated phosphate bath, the wrong phosphoric acid, an incorrect percentage of acid to water, insufficient "coking" time, improper rinse water and insufficient drying time all contribute to a good looking part.

My point was that the phosphate plating in itself provides minimal protection.Sometimes people forget to oil it up good. It is the oil that adds the real protection from corrosion. The phosphate plating provides a foundation of mictoscopic jagged surface for the oil to hold on to. Without the oil the surface would corrode quickly.

I was busy dipping my parking brake pieces in thinner to remove the undercoat and found my 2A605 also had a zinc coating on it.
As I understand the conversation here, that labels it a replacement part. I pondered why, so I gather it's due to lack of lube at the 's' points of the 2628 and its brother 2853 going to the front?

But after looking at my parts it appears there are at least two different versions of the 2A790 connector.
67gta289 shows one version and I have another on my car as shown in the attachment.

Another 67 date thing?

The part you have in your picture is not the connector. Your picture is of the equalizer. That is why it looks different then the connector in 67gta289's picture .

Ok, I see.
I was looking at the Osborne Chassis Assy Manual and there is a large section of the picture missing.
Since my box is missing the connector I mistook the equalizer for it.
After I downloaded 67gta289's first picture I see what the Assy Manual was missing.
And now I have to go find the connector!

It's been long time since I've been under a Mustang with all of its PB pieces.
And I'm an idiot ...

While we are on the topic of parking brakes parts and colors, I can't tell from this picture if it's the flash or a zinc part. I thought the whole parking brake tube and brackets were SG. Not the parts inside -- just the tube.
The part in question is the bracket and the large visible bolt (head) which goes through the firewall.

Recognize that picture - 7R02S2072xx. Let me deep dive into more examples to see if that is a flash/camera results or a true representation to help

The wider shot of that picture shows a close up of the firewall pad pattern that was being requested in the One build thread yesterday

Good call. It appears that the finishes were squded due to the flash. I typically try to hand light rather than use the flash on the camera for that reason. Found another picture of the same area taken without the flash than day

A couple of pictures from other cars. Fair number of other cars had replacement carpet or carpet trimmed so the mounting hardware was not visible

As always hope this helps you and others

Appreciate the pictures, Jeff.
I didn't want to assemble all of the zinc plated parts and then tear it apart later.
