66 9 inch third member almost complete
« on: February 12, 2018, 07:49:58 PM »
Gents,
My rear end is almost complete. I wanted to post a few photos to see if anyone can identify any issues before I proceed.

Note: you're looking at a O.E. spec. 9" with a fresh set of bearings, Nitro 3.50:1 gear set, and Yukon Dura Grip positrac. Sand blasted and Semi gloss powdercoat on housing. Date code correct.  Pumpkin painted with rustoleum heritage red satin

Still waiting on the mounting nuts and copper washers

Any noticeable issues? Does the paint look correct?

imo you need more bare metal showing on the face of the housing around the studs. keep in mind that some of this will show when assembled. also what type of gasket? it tii will show around the edges. what finish on the studs themselves? the tips will be visible.

Using gun blueing on the housing bolts.

can you show me an example of what you mean by more bare metal exposed?

I just bought a cheap gasket from NPD but it says concours correct

i don't have a pic but that entire flat area should be bare. looks like it has paint around the edges.

This is the one I'm using for reference. Is this incorrect?

Different pinion retainers (different applications 8: verses 9" for example) have different machined surfaces. Though the OP didn't mention it he's working with a 9" application (Since modified the title for clarity)

Top example is 8"  bottom 9"

Ok for the machined surfaces. Other finishes and contrast ....... you can and did a better job IMHO. Your example is very mono-tone - likely rattle canned

Title mentions I'm working with 9".

The second message seems contradictory and is confusing.

I posted that at "Reply #5 on: Today at 08:50:45 PM »"

I changed the title after writing that statement to better describe what was being covered and help others as they scan/search through the section.

Notice the line at the bottom of your first post - " « Last Edit: Today at 08:58:12 PM by J_Speegle »" When I retitled it  ;)

J Speegle,
Copy on the title change.  Thank you for doing that.

Do you have any specific feedback for my restoration of my rear end or shall I proceed with the build? I thought the paint was a little to bright.

There sure is a lot of color variance between all of these differential colors.
Certainly can be due to camera settings.

However, when I think of the color of a 3rd member, this is what comes to mind:

Sort of a DP74 with a slight red tinge and a bit more shine.

As well as lightly, digital cameras doing what they do and monitor settings

DP74 can be pretty shinny as was allot of undercarriage red oxides. There does appear to me (in person) a range rather than a specific color. IMHO always find the best examples inside the third member (remember these were painted completely before machining) out of harms way, protected from the elements and well oiled  :)

As a point of reference, the 9" that came with my car bucked October 13 is a 65 style housing. I saw in another post that OP car was bucked November 4 and uses the 66 style 9" There is a post somewhere on this site talking about running drive line production changes for things like motor mounts, clutch linkage, drive shafts etc
