Steering shaft finish
« on: December 05, 2010, 10:00:13 AM »
Good Sunday morning to all !
I'm in the process of restoring my steering column to address pitting etc on the tube, repaint etc. While I had the shaft out I wanted to make it look good too. The car is a Dec 66, Dearborn built 67, non tilt. I wire wheeled the bottom 3rd. of the shaft to bare metal. Wanted to get confirmation of prpoer finish to reapply. Forum search didn't turn up an answer. I believe it should be zinc phosphate "natural". Is this correct ? ;D

Are you referring to the shaft that gets covered up by the steering column tube?

Charles..Yes..that's the one. Mine had considerable surface rust etc.Thought it would look bad sticking out of a freshly painted column tube....Thanks for the assistance.

I would have to guess it was just a plain steel with possibly a light oil coating.  I don't believe they were phosphate/oil coating.
