Topic: Reverse Rivet Starter Solenoid

I have an unrestored starter solenoid that's a burgundy color with reverse rivets rather than the more typical black. It has the Ford logo within an oval, as opposed to a square (which I've been told signifies it's prior to early 65). Any ideas?

Holy smokes, that's a really nice solenoid. Mine isn't close to as shiny...  I was wondering though, on mine, the rivet "head" is on top of the solenoid and the indentation on the rivets is on the bottom. Any clue? Also, I noticed a "B" designation on your part box, so is it true that the burgundy or brown solenoids are earlier than their black counterparts (I heard that they were also placed on the K-codes).

Yes, most observations have been the burgundy solenoids were used before the black.  There was no special use for them, it's just what was used in production.  Seems they were phased out in Summer '64.

   Not to get off thread, but if they were phased out in the summer of '64 would either black or brown be considered correct for my late June, '64 build date?

You could go either way, but I have some examples of cars built around yours with the reddish-brown solenoids.
