Wanted-oil filter pics
« on: June 16, 2014, 07:52:59 PM »
Looking for some pics of original oil filters, specifically for '86 GT. I believe assembly line was painted gray embossed Motorcraft. What would the first oil change Motorcraft look like.  Any photos of either/both appreciated. I kept everything on my '86 since new except that filter. I lost 1 point at MCA show (urestored) because of the filter and want to see what I'm looking for.

Thanks,
mitch

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the "1st oil change" Motorcraft should look like this one (with the embossed end):

Hi Mitch,

BobV is right.

MCA Rules state this

"Must be correct embossed Motorcraft FL-1A"  1 Point deduction if not embossed.

Thanks guys!  That's what I needed to know.  I better stock up while I can. I'm sure at some point they will be tough to find.  Didn't know if that's what the dealer one looked like.

Mitch I am a 79-93 Mustang Concours judge.  These Embossed filters are tough to find!

I would stock up.  I think I have five NOS ones.  I just bought another one from that link :)

P.S. I would love to see some pictures of your 86!

Have you ever checked put foureyedpride.com

Take care

I am buying 5 from the link.  :)
I visit foureyedpride but I'm not much of a poster.
MCA magazine Mustang Times took some photos after the Springfield MCA show so maybe it will be in the magazine at some point.
Seems like the original white battery is a tough piece, I noticed several people taking pics of the battery at the show.
People thought I was crazy driving the car up there and then putting in a dead battery for the show.

Mitch -
Is this you?

and, yes, I took a picture of the battery too...  ;D

Yes, the embossed filters are getting tougher to find, but they are out there. I've been stocking up as well. Even shared a few with friends.
There's also a MFL1-A - Mexican filter. The embossed part is still correct, but the screen print is in Spanish. Those work well when painted grey.  ;)

Also, keep in mind that most of these cars don't get many miles. While an annual oil change is still recommended, if the car only gets 500 miles/year, I'd run the same filter for 2 years. I also know people who swap oil filters at the show for that extra point - store the original filter in a sealed coffee can between shows.

Yep, That's me!

Thanks for the eBay link. I ordered 5 from that guy, He gave me a break on the price-$10 each shipped.

Then a buddy at a Ford dealer found me 6 more so I am probably good. The '86 doesn't get driven too much but so far I have never trailered it.

Glad to help! I picked up a few more from him too.

We'll have to meet up sometime. I was the 86 Saleen in Concours Driven a couple aisles east of you. Are you planning to go to the National in Lincoln NE?
My Saleen actually resided in St Louis for 20+ years (Tom Nelson). It had 40k miles on it when Tom sold - I just turned 46k miles. Same as you - never trailered, always driven.

BTW, fun comparison shot - your engine compartment, then mine...

BobV, Nice car! You were parked in the row of mustang years, right? I know your car too! Tom was in our Mustang club(Show-Me Mustang) for awhile. I think I sold him a set of headlight covers. Back in the day I had some on my car after seeing the Saleens with them.
I don't remember the car looking as good as you have it looking now, I checked your car out at the show. Very sharp!  I see you still have R12 A/C, impressive! I finally converted   because it always needed a charge every couple of years  $ and the A/C has to work for the wife.
I don't think we will make the Lincoln show, my wife is going through chemo treatments and the timing doesn't work for us. Kicking around the idea of the Georgia MCA National but don't want to drive the '86 that far, may try trailering if everything goes well. The car had enough points for a Platinum award in Unrestored  but they only give those at Grand Nationals or the last show of the year.
Again, I really like your car.

Hey guys,

If you bought any Motorcraft filters from the link make sure you check them good. I had one box that had a STP filter and all of them looked like they have been wet and one was real rusty. Checking back with the seller to see what he will do.

Motorcraft filters.

The seller is taking them back, 2 looked ok, 2 were rusty and one was a STP filter. So I am sending 3 back.

I got 6 NOS MOTORCRAFT FL-1 from a buddy of mine, they are not FL-1A though. Looks like they are date coded 1973.  They are a little longer and the printing is different but still has MOTORCRAFT embossed on them. They are perfect NOS but not correct for the '86 unfortunately.

FYI - The date code on the filter imaged in that Ebay auction is 904069211. Translates to April 6, 1992. Yes, the white Motorcraft vintage OE Batteries are "impossible" to find. I carry mine in one of those plastic marine battery boxes along with the tools necessary to swap it out at a show. That way I never have to hunt down the tools and the battery stays clean in storage.
See y'all in Lincoln.
Nice cars guys. I saw both of them in Springfield.
