1968 302 4-speed with Thermactor (smog) pump
« on: October 25, 2016, 02:02:00 PM »
Greetings all,

Does anyone here have a picture of a 68 302 with thermactor and power steering?  I am reassembling a 68 Cougar XR7-G with a 302 and 4-speed.  The thermactor was missing when I got it and I have a replacement but want to be sure of the configuration of the belts and pulleys.  Also, does anyone know where I can get a correct smog belt?

Thanks
Fran

Some pictures that may help with details. Unfortunately no real good unrestored examples :(

Hope these help in some way. As far as belt guess you've already checked Kevin Marti since he is the major supplier of all reproduction belts at the current time. Guess you may have to start looking at the service replacements

Any G car with 4 speed is very rare. Which 302 engine? F or J code?
Only 3, F code 302-2V engines came with 4 speed.
A total of 6, J code 302-4V XR7-G's came with 4 speed.

Jeff, any pictures of 1968 302 engines?
The 1968 J code 302-4V engines that I have seen with thermactor smog, had individual smog tubes for each cylinder drilled and tapped into the cylinder heads.
289 smog cylinder heads have a single tube that mounts to the end like in the photos above.

Not sure how the 302-2V 1968 cylinder heads for 302 were handled for smog.

Jeff,

Those pics (especially the last one) is going to be a big, big help to me.  Thanks

Scott,

26 total 4-speeds, mine is one of the three F-codes.

And I was able to get what is possibly  the correct smog belt from Marti.  We will see when it arrives.

You guys are the best....I have yet to "stump the experts".

Thanks again,
Fran

Also, does anyone know where I can get a correct smog belt?

With or without A/C?  If with A/C is it Factory or Dealer installed?

Scott

Have better pics with the engine out of the car but keep getting error messages trying to post here. PM me if you think those would be helpful.

Not thermactor answer but since I don't see any A/C idler pulleys and you did say you were restoring that you should know you should have the early style A/C pulleys  used in 67 and 68 until sometime approximately in March 68. I am not with my picture file or would show the difference. I will post tomorrow unless someone doesn't post before.

Will look and see.

Agree I've only seen heads marked 4V (non- smog also) with the external style castings at the exhaust manifold face

As of now, I think the pics you good people have provided are enough.  I may be back though......

Thank you for your help.
