Title: Spring 69 351W and FMX Paint Marks
Post by: J_Speegle on January 14, 2015, 05:42:51 PM
Chris - 1969 Cale II (here on the site) asked me to post these pictures for him at to what he found when he disassembled his 351W that he removed from his March 27, 1969 build car. As the pictures show - most of the freeze plugs have already been replaced.

351W Picture #1- Head Freeze Plug Guessing the head might have been mounted so that this freeze plug was situated on the front of the engine. If so this is similar to a number of other small block findings I've see over the years

Any idea if these marks were made at the engine and transmission assembly locations or inspection marks at the car assembly factory?

Believe that all of the marks were likely placed on the engine and trans where they were assembled rather than at the car assembly plants given the marks.

Pretty certain as to the freeze plug and transmission ones. the back of the head and the block ones I've not seen examples of before

Would have been interesting to inspect the one where the VIN was stamped to confirm that it was in place before the stamp was applied - but believe sosince there is not a skip in the writing/ applying of the marking

Thanks for posting the photos. My car is not a mustang but the engines and trans came from the same plants. Here are the numbers on the block  C9OE 6015 B 4 and 9B25. I am not great on date codes, but Feb 1969 second week, 5th day? Or feb 25th. The trans tag is C9OC C11B   PHB F. What is really interesting I have a second FMX from a 69 Torino, the tag was mounted in a different spot and the tag is stamped different. This why Marti Auto likes to know what your tag looks like. My cars FMX tag was mounted on the upper right hand side (viewed from behind) of the tail shaft housing with the C9 number on top and the bolt hole on the right. The other trans was mounted on the pan bolt, upside down, bolt hole on the left and the C9 number on the bottom. So, in the restoration world which would you use to pattern? Both are right and completely different.

Guessing that you provided the casting date for the block

9B25 would be Feb 25th 1969
